So stupid. Our FO/coaches have so little situational awareness.

What we needed around Burrow,
Chase, Hendrickson, and Tee are dependable guys. Not high risk gambles.

But they were so focused on trying to hit a HR at WR/TE so they could let Tee & Gesicki walk that they took gambles when they should have taken more solid options.

We let Bates & Reader go and still have not paid Chase, Hendrickson, or Higgins.

Pay those guys. The guys you cut are the Rankins, Cappa, Hubbard, Volson, and Moss types. If we have to tighten further & waive McPherson, Stone, Pratt or let BJ Hill, Hilton, & Gesicki walk, so be it.

But don't cry poor. Burrow is willing to restructure. With that & common sense cuts, we'll have upwards of $90 mil. More than enough for Tee, Chase, & Trey to get deals done AND sign some significant FA's (OG, DT, DE, BJ, Hilton, Gesicki, etc.).

as long as we keep your Higgins @ 25 million a year ..we will be fine

It might be a distraction to camp if he...well whatever the next thing he does. So yeah, there is something left to lose.

I don't think the Bengals will but they need to distance themselves from him ASAP. And the idea that football is somehow helping him is also wrong. If this guy is ever gonna turn it around he needs to hit rock bottom so he can decide REALLY decide to live a different kind of life from the one he has so far.

And in any case, football is not his priority.

I think they might as well keep him and see if he gets his crap together. Exceptional athletes like Burrow/Chase etc aren’t going to let the drama of a third stringer affect their focus or play so I am not worried about that. I think they would be able to keep their teammates focused on what matters.
The contract situations would be bigger distractions if they are not resolved.

This latest eviction seems to have been caused by someone else staying at his place while he was gone so while he has been a knucklehead so far this latest incident shouldn’t really change what they do either way. Let him come to camp and see if hes learned anything. If they don’t see improvement then tell him goodbye.

One last chance. Just don’t count on him for anything and plan like he will be gone.

If he shows up with the right attitude and proves he is committed, maturing, and capable of learning from mistakes then I’d let him compete for a roster spot.

I’m wondering if he got ahold of some lead paint chips or he was huffing gasoline or something. Because holy shit his IQ must he way down there.

A voice of reason.  Nothing gained cutting him.  He's already virtually gone...  The 2nd eviction was over friends staying at his place with dogs....  Not exactly "cut" worthy.

He certainly needs to mature...  And I have very little expectations of him.  But treat him as if he already has two strikes, and see what comes about.  He either surprises and grows up, or you cut him at the first sign of strike three.

I'm not sure why that article left out some of the quotes form Tobin.  It only includes this:

Quote:“I can’t want it more for him than he wants it for himself," Tobin said. "I like Jermaine. We aren’t giving up on him.“

I first saw this on my news app then found the link below that includes more from Tobin:

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/bengals-executive-duke-tobin-message-jermaine-burton/

Quote:“He’s done nothing, and he’s going to have to start doing something quickly,” Tobin stated.

Quote:“He’s an immensely talented guy. We’re not giving up on him, but he’s gonna have to start showing it now — he’s gonna have to take the next step in his career…” Tobin said. “I like Jermaine… He’s gonna have to want it for himself more than I want it for him.”

Quote:Tobin acknowledged the risks involved in drafting Burton, as these issues were evident prior to last year’s draft and some teams removed him from their board altogether.

“We knew we were taking a risk,” Tobin admitted. “We felt comfortable that we could help him through some of the challenges he’s had in the past, and we’re going to continue to try to help him”

Edit I found more, somewhat repeated from above via Cincinnati Enquirer:

https://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/nfl/bengals/2025/01/29/duke-tobin-bengals-offseason-primer-with-joe-burrow-input/78027743007/

Quote:Q: What has Jermaine Burton done to deserve a spot on the roster?

Tobin: He's done nothing, and he's going to have to start doing something quickly. We knew we were taking a risk. We felt comfortable that we could help him through some of the challenges he's had in the past, and we're going to continue to try to help him. But this is professional football, and you have to take accountability, and you have to be accountable to your teammates, your coaches, and the team that you're playing for, and he has to figure that out. He's got to figure that out fast. He's a very talented player, and we knew that there were risks in taking him. We knew there were rewards in taking him. We know what both of those are. We're hoping for the rewards. We're giving him the resources he needs to get to those rewards, but at the end of the day, you can't want it more for somebody than they want it for themselves. And we're hoping that Jermaine figures that out.

Anyway sounds like he is going to get another chance as long as he doesn't get evicted from every apartment complex in the greater Cincinnati area.  Tongue

Burton may be given a second chance, but it appears he will be on a short leash. I hope it lights a fire under him as he has all the tools to be a solid #2 WR or slot receiver.

His better come to camp with a new attitude and prove his worth, otherwise he may be a cut casualty after pre-season.

The link that Bengals74 posted was from Duke and Zac's press conference from the combine, I believe it was yesterday.

Those other quotes that you found were from another press conference from a few weeks ago.

My mistake I didn't check the dates just googled and scanned the articles for quotes.  Label me lazy.   So basically saying the same thing he said a few weeks ago.

Horrible news. Outside his antics he showed very little when he was playing in regular season. I understand their position but I think this is a waste of resources that could be better utilized elsewhere.

I can understand them giving him another chance, young kid doing stupid stuff. But I'd say as has been said he's on a very, very short leash.

The young man has some ability, but can he stay focused enough to prove it?

This is where a vet like Boyd would have been nice to have around.

Put Burton in his hip pocket and hope the good habits rub off on him, not in a Justin Tucker kind of way.

That said, if this kid can turn it around and dedicate himself to football, great things could happen.

Not betting on it though.

Burton actually has the tools to even be a #1, that is how talented he is. Rare quicks, speed, strength to go with great hands.

Problem is he has no brains evidently, but kids can grow up yah never know.

I like Boyd and I am for bringing him back but I heard he was being weird his last year or so with the Bengals, not staying and
signing autographs or hanging out with fans while guys like Tee were. Don't know if he is the professional leader to do this or not.

Who knows, maybe the team puts Burton on our practice sqaud. A team could claim him, but would have to put him on their 53 man roster. Or as others have said, he is a young idiot, let's hope he does not become an old idiot and can turn it around.

I would not bet on it, but no real risk letting him compete in training camp, he fails to show up, cut him.

The ship has sailed with Boyd.

I was speaking more in retrospect, having Boyd mentoring a rookie Burton.

If the Bengals are serious about bringing him back from the edge, they need to get him a swim buddy to stick with him and keep him on the straight and narrow. Maybe bring in a vet, like Hopkins or Slayton, to stick with and learn from.

But he may be on too thin of ice to save.

Boyd would be cheap, knows how to get open and Joe knows him very well. Not against bringing him back and adding D-Hop or Slayton
especially if we tag and trade Tee. Have to think of solutions now, not in retrospect lol

I would take Boyd as a #4 all day, but think Gesicki took that role!

Still, at $3M, that is a tough match up for an unskilled CB...

Day dreaming!

Yes, hoping Gesicki is back either way.

Think he will have a huge year after gaining more chemistry with Burrow. Natural pass catcher with crazy size at 6'6".

If we brought Boyd back it would be as a depth piece for sure.

What is your top number for Gesicki, yearly?

I hate the idea of paying him over $8M, as he is basically a solid slot receiver with a crazy catch radius.

I do think the team would benefit from a legit vet WR on the roster.
