Sickle cell trait is usually not a problem. They have to maintain hydration in the heat. And the trainers and the player need to be aware of potential symptoms. He was able to play again, but as a precaution didn’t play in Denver again.

Covid 19 can cause clots which is not a good combination with a medical condition that can do the same.

I know there was concern with Geno playing in Denver but he still played every time we went there pretty sure?

IIRC, only 4 NCAA athletes with sickle cell trait experienced a problem during one year. So it is rare, but possible. The key to preventing a tragedy is prevention along with awareness of what to look for and what to do.

But, I have to imagine the decision to play with sickle cell trait and the risk of Covid 19 would certainly make one think twice about the risk.

In the OP I noted that Geno had that trait.  And in the post you quoted, the next line was "statistically at least 1 player on each team has sickle trait" so it was noted that sickle trait was a concern.  However, Asthma and Type 2, are far more likely to be present in NFL players than sickly trait

Fauci had no connection with the Wuhan clinic and the only thing you know about Stephen Smith is that he appears on Fox News.  Most doctors that are "actually treating patients" trust Fauci over Smith.


When it comes to research I will trust research scientists over practicing physicians.  Why would anyone trust a practicing physician on research when it is illegal to give placeboes to patients?

Having a newborn in the house seems to be a theme so far.  We obviously have very little information on anyone with high-risk family members.  Geno Atkins has sickle trait which puts him at high risk.  Other players likely have type 2 diabetes or asthma.  Those big bodies on the OL and DL are more prone to blood clots.

I don't think Geno sits out.  He has the recessive trait and even played in Denver before...My guess is the Pats are "sitting this season out" and going for Trevor Lawrence.  Worked (sort of) for the Colts bagging it after Manning to get Luck.  

Having a team of young guys could actually work out for the Bengals in this respect.  

Interesting the list says sickle cell disease. I have read on here people wondering about Geno, however if he has sickle cell trait that is much different than sickle cell disease. Trait alone does not infer increased risk.
