Hobson’s annual disappointment cap article

Hobson has a depressing voice by nature I think

Hobspin is the kind of guy you want on your team. Going out there and saying the darndest stuff with a grin on his face. But I have a hard time buying most of what he says unless it's a piece about someone's personal history/life. He does a good job on those. Just about anything else I tend to ignore.

The more I hear him talk, the more I think he just legitimately doesn't understand the cap...like at all.

Plus probably factoring in a Waynes release.

We don't even have the minimum 51 players under contract at this time.

We have roster spots filled by air right now that will cost money to fill.

Jake Liscow broke down the available cash the Bengals should have to spend after draft picks, practice squad, tenders, etc...and Hobson took that number and still tried to subtract all the things Jake had already accounted for. It was embarrassing to listen to.

Listening to the podcast I think Hobson was not counting the release of Waynes and Hopkins like Liscow was.

But I still think Hobson is right on that point.  Even if we have $80 million in cash to spend this year we are not going to get more than one player with a $20+ million signing bonus.  If you give 2 guys $20+ million then you only have $40 million to replace 6 of these 8 losses.

Starting CB
Starting RT
Starting OG
Starting Center
Starting TE
Starting DT
2 back up DTs that played as many snaps as a starter.

And any decent free agent is going to get a signing bonus.  So that cash burns up quickly.

No.  I know he said he would not be surprised to get Jensen.

He predicted Ogunjobi would be the 20m up front 'splash' signing.

Jake's reaction pretty much summed up my thoughts as well.

Why does anyone care what Hobson continually says and get all stressed about it?

Many of you need a life.

I understand that.
Like I said, I am just assuming that they are planning for certain players to not make the roster, and thus are just temporarily occupying cap.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

If Ogunjobi is retained over BJ Hill, it better be because 1) Hill decided to go elsewhere in FA, and 2) Ogunjobi was willing to sign for $8 mill or less.

Hobspin gonna Hobspin...but if we go back to bargain bin shopping, I'll go back to not watching this year. It'll tell me all I need to know about the front office.

How long has he been the Bengals writer?
I know he's been since at least 2006, which is when I started going to Bengals.com.

I skipped most of the last 4-5 seasons prior to 2021. Sometimes I checked box scores, sometimes I didn't even do that. I don't talk out of my rear. If I say I'll do something, I'll do it.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

Yep, it was right before the playoff game in 2005.   Sick

As WVUHomer suggested above we can do a Mahomes deal:

Instead of signing him to a new deal we simply extend the one he is on.

We can exercise his 5th year giving us 2 more years at his rookie rate before his big number hits.

One thing we most likely do different than KC is a much larger bonus with this extension.  KC gave PM a $500M deal with a $10M signing bonus along with another 250M guaranteed - that they have to have in cash in escrow.

We could offer Burrow $500M with a much larger signing bonus to lessen to the escrow cash requirement.

We could offer Joe 160M in guaranteed money with a 60M signing bonus which would add 12M to the cap hit for the next 5 years (2 of those he is still on his rookie base) and we would need to place only 85M into the escrow.

After this season is actually a good time for us - other than locking in the franchise QB as early as possible, our free agency requirements after this season are not onerous.

We will can exercise Jonah's 5th year to push him back another year, although that could be risky.

We may still have the Bates issue.

Bell and Pratt are the only 2 major free agents (this assumes we actually do things right this offseason)

The other possibility is extending Higgins after this season, he does not have a 5th year option, this would keep him from testing the waters and receiving WR1 pay until we extend Chase.

It is crucial we have a solid offseason right now in free agency and some hits in the draft.

All good stuff, and appreciated (and WVU Homer).  Although I have a math brain, I have never taken the time to analyze the contracts, the cap, etc.  There are a handful of experts that I rely on for that information.  I am more of a draft and FA nerd that loves diving in to film, PFF, etc. on potential additions.

It is relieving to think that Burrow's elevated cap hit won't really hit for several years.  This is SUCH a fun time ADDING FA and considering (maybe we are and not the Bengal's Brass, but I digress) trading picks for players.

Which, BTW, I'm hearing a 3rd rounder for La'el Collins?  Yes, please!
