Chase not Practicing
It's business.

You guys wouldn't be okay with being criminally underpaid despite bringing an assload of value to your employer.

At least I would hope not.

When Burrow was interviewed during the Training Camps tour, he was asked about being able to have a complete Training Camp.

He stated every rep in TC is important, because you learn something about each one and can discuss it; otherwise, you;re doing it on Gameday.

obviously, I never understood the folks that cheered Chase on about how awesome he is and doesn't need to practice.

Contracts are also part of business. The Bengals have one that is valid for 2-more years that can be extended up to 4.

I highly doubt he isn't ready, it isn't in his own best interest to not be in football shape and I am sure he will practice soon to get his reps in.

Burrow and Chase have about the best chemistry of any QB/WR in the NFL. They will be fine and I am sure Chase knows the new wrinkles in
Pitcher's Offense. We saw a lot more motion in the first Preseason game though, which was nice to see but Chase will have to get used to this
soon. We didn't run nearly as much motion as a lot of Offenses last season. I just hope it doesn't result in more penalties.

I like the Bengals being the least penalized team over the last 3 years.

But it's all going to be about the guaranteed money that might cause a hiccup with the Bengals.

Sounds great to me. ThumbsUp

He’s not criminally underpaid. He got guaranteed millions before he stepped on the field. I don’t recall Jefferson behaving like this.

He’s criminally underpaid relative to his demonstrated value. If we assume he is worth, say, $31M per season, then he’s only making 31.6% of his “true” value this season.

He flew to Chicago with the team.

Yes, but that’s a bigger issue, more of an NFLPA/bargaining agreement thing. I see both sides. I’m mostly ok with players using their leverage when they can BC NFL contracts are not fully guaranteed. The owners are really the ones benefiting the most. How is it the most violent major professional sport is the one with the least player security.

If I’m the bengals, what really is the rush? He is under contract for 2 more years.

IMO get the deal inked. Meet him in the middle and push some of the guarantees to injury guarantees. Assuming he doesn’t get hurt, he will see the money.. bengals MO, if he gets hurt?
He gets his guarantee.

Idk, this shouldn’t be this hard.

80 guys playing on the field podcasters talk about the one guy not playing. We had the Tee talk for a few months now it's the Chase talk wish at least one of the podcasters would stick to the guys putting in effort on the field. This Chase stuff can be summed up in 5 mins of video, why because nothing has changed at all.

The Bengals took a risk when they gave Ja'Marr Chase a nearly $20 million dollar signing bonus and nearly 20 million guaranteed and $30 million overall contract, before he ever played a game at the NFL level. There were a other first-round signings where the Bengals got very little for their signings. John Ross, David Pollock, Ki-Jana Carter, to name a few.

Sure, it would be nice if the two sides came to an equitable agreement on a new contract. But this hold-in by Chase with two years to go on his contract is a bad look imho and something I never expected of Chase. (If anyone could be complaining about needing a new contract it would be Patrick Mahomes and there is zero complaint from him.)

Do you listen to the Bengals podcasts? That's exactly what they do. They give it a couple min of airtime discussion at most and talk about everyone else.

Pretty sure all rookie contracts and signing bonuses are predetermined under the current CBA these days. I don’t think the team did anything with Ja’Marr’s deal that they didn’t have to.

And Mahomes literally just restructured his deal last season.

Weird take.  Draft picks are slotted.  Are you suggesting the Bengals trade down and/or out of the first round in the instance they have a high first round draft pick again?

If it were up to me and I was making the rules (which obviously it's not and I'm not) I would say a contract is a contract. You and a team come to an agreement on terms and sign for X number of years. You play those years under that contract, period. Whether you shine or stink, the contract is honored. No re-negotiating or extensions until the contract it over. If a player violates the contract, he is unable to play in the league again until he honors it. If a player is injured and his career over, the injury settlement is a percentage of the contract computed on how far into the contract they played. Problem solved.

Yet a team can cut them anytime? So much for that contract....

There lies the problem with this argument. We like to force players to honor a contract, yet teams are free to treat a contract like it's worthless.

This is strange logic. Extending a contract is equivalent to not honoring the contract?

If the team was forecast to stink this year, this would matter a lot less. I hope this doesn't play out where they lose a game they shouldn't have, and that costs them a home playoff game. Pick a side, but, either way. There are potential consequences.

I don't worry about them losing a game due to Chase since he's missed time over the years and they won. I do worry about him being in football shape and not pulling something from missing all of spring / training camp when he does return.

We take shots at Tee and (worry about) Burrow injury history, but Chases injury history is just as suspect. We tend to give him a pass.
