Chase not Practicing
(08-15-2024, 11:33 AM)jj22 Wrote: I don't worry about them losing a game due to Chase since he's missed time over the years and they won. I do worry about him being in football shape and not pulling something from missing all of spring / training camp when he does return.

We take shots at Tee and (worry about) Burrow injury history, but Chases injury history is just as suspect. We tend to give him a pass.

Haven't you heard? Ja"Marr's in the best shape of his life and listening to his body.

Isn't it time for Burrow to want to restructure his contract? I mean it has been a year and Love from GB just signed the #1 QB contract currently. Meanwhile Patrick in KC is #11 at only $45 M and only has 3 of 4 SB Titles..in 6 years.

Actually I see both sides in this whole contract thing. The players and agents know the astronomical worth of the owners and see that if the current team/owner isn't willing to pay them then there is a team that will.

And, the owners see that player/agent signed a contract 2-3 years ago and expect them to honor it. They are well aware of the rapid rise of contracts happening but a contract is a contract.
It has to be a tough issue to solve without burning bridges and causing problems.

The most annoying part of this whole thing. I’m about 1-2 weeks, a deal will most likely be announced, that could have been completed weeks ago. The framework and 90% of the deal has likely been done.

We all knew very few of our teams back then had a real shot at winning it all. Can't say the same about today's rosters.

And Mahomes literally just restructured his deal last season.

Yeah, but he did that because the Team needed him to free up cap; it's still the same contract. It's not like he came to them demanding more $

Folks can say whatever they want but Kermit signed perhaps the most selfless contract of any superstar in any sport.

Teams are able to secure longer term deals with players they like and players are able to add more guaranteed years of work. Extensions allow for the honoring of an original contract while simultaneously agreeing to a new one. Anecdotally, this happens all the time in my industry (technical consulting). It's very common for an extension to hit several months prior to "contract end".

As a fan, it would suck IMO. I'm imagining a scenario where Joe Burrow finishes his rookie contract out without an extension and hits the open market only to be swept away by a more cash flush owner.

That's why there's a cap.

Well, one thing we know is that Mike Brown will not be bullied into a contract by ANY player, and he will own Chase's rights for several more years. It will not surprise me one bit that the season starts and ends without a new contract.

It's better for the organization to sign Chase now than wait.

You're wrong here Bfine. The restructure he did THIS offseason was just to free up cap. The one he did last year moved $43.3m from the back end of the contract to 2024-2027 (when they'll just re-negotiate again when that new money and guarantees have run up).

Quote:According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Mahomes' restructured contract will pay him $210.6 million between 2023 and 2026. That makes his average annual salary $52.65 million, second among all quarterbacks behind only Joe Burrow's $55 million. The entire $210.6 million is guaranteed, and the deal can be worth $218.1 million with incentives.

Additionally, the Chiefs plan to revisit the contract after 2026.

It wasn't one of those JUST one of those restructures where they cleared up cap space for the current year. They did indeed move around other money and increase guaranteed money. Now Mahomes handled it well because on the outside he was very content and happy with his previous contract and probably has the juice that he could have made a stink and gotten even more money as the best QB in the NFL.

But behind the scenes he absolutely negotiated with the team to get that extra $43.3m moved to now and all that money guaranteed. His previous deal saw him by FAR become the highest paid QB in the league (a title he held for two straight years) and Mahomes (rightly) was never going to let himself fall out of the top-10 paid QBs.

All that to agree that he never demanded more $ that his original contract provided?

It is, but that does not change what I said. Mike Brown has proven over and over he will not be pressured by a player. He said the other day this probably isn't the best time. Doesn't mean I agree with him.

that "front office" has done a pretty remarkable job the last five years

Well, you're arguing he renegatiated a "team friendly" deal when he has the 6th highest cap number among QB's this year and the highest cap number among QB's in '25.

From a marketing perspective I'd disagree on this.  Men in commercials, whether they are famous or just running characters, tend to play the role of the affable dork.  Peyton Manning, Patrick Mahommes, and Gronk come to mind for the athletes, as does the hokey white dude trope in the "becoming your parents" insurance commercials, or the goofy guy who plays off of Flo in the other insurance commercials.

Gronk in particular acts like an easily amazed and confused toddler in those USAA commercials.  I'm not saying Chase or Burrow couldn't get some gigs, but I don't see them factoring in "Can I spend the next decade acting confused and amazed that people qualify for a credit union and/or shilling for some predatory insurance company?" when they consider their NFL contracts.

Maybe the fact that so many commercials are for insurance companies is why they go with such whimsically stupid people and premises, it's really bizarre if you think about it.  Without sounding too weird about this, Mahommes seems like he is inordinately accepted when he's acting like a "hokey white dude" for a guy who is black.  Still, there is only so much of the pie to go around so not everyone who wins a super bowl can make bank pretending to be a giddy simpleton.  The fact that they are athletes is almost used against them as it shows them as overgrown little kids, or something.

I know there are sponsorship deals and stuff that don't require acting like a big ol' dorkus mallorkus, but I feel like there is more money in being a running gag or recurring marketing character rather than saying "I have a SB ring, people will buy your product if I'm in the ad."

Of course, I'd totally buy Joe Burrow's X-TREME Football for the Turbo Grafix-16 CD add on.

Maybe.  Lord knows if we win a meaningless game in 2019 and Burrow is a Dolphin I'd be less optimistic the front office would be doing a good job at the moment.

You are right on Mikey Boy but he doesn't run things now, Katie is the one that does contracts.

Sure hope we get a deal done with Chase before the season starts for everyone's sake.

Katie's always been the one doing contracts. But Mike, even as he has distanced himself from everything, still has final say. Don't kid yourself otherwise.

1 dude said if anyone should be mad about being underpaid it should be PM

1 dude retorted with Mahomes just restructured his contract

i merely pointed out that PM asked for no more money and the team has approached him both times to move (not add) money to the contract

To compare that to JC holding out with 2 years on his signed contract because he wants a drastic raise is disrespectful to Mahomes.
