They need 2 guards for sure but the timing of the cut makes me wonder if they saw something yesterday at the combine that made them confident they will get a starting guard in the draft.
Hopefully just means they are getting close to a deal with one of the big 3 that need new contracts.

My guess is they knew they were cutting him unless he would take a significant pay cut to stay. By cutting him now he can get a jump on free agency next week.

Cappa though was trending down, like Hilton but he is on downside it seems, so need to let him move on

I think Hubbard should be given a shot at a greatly reduced contract. I would say no more than 3.5 miilion. If he says no, he needs to be cut also to save 9.5 million in cap space. He is set to be a 11.5 million cap hit, so we would eat 2 million (all he has guaranteed in 2025).

I hope we go get 2 starting OG's in 2025 in FA. My hope is Becton and Daniels or Fries. Then, if the right pick is there in later rounds, draft a guard. This would allow us to use our 1st and 2nd round pick on an edge rusher, safety or if a TE like Warren fell.
We need our starting OL prior to the draft and as of now, we need 2 guards to start. It would not break my heart to grab the Georgia center with our 3rd round pick. I like Lee, but think the Georgia center is a better option long term.

I have a hard time seeing the Bengals sign 2 top 6 guards in FA this year. More likely, 1 in FA and 1 draft pick in the top 3 rds.

The Bengals may use that extra 8 million saved cutting Cappa to re-sign Tee and look to the draft for Cappa's replacement
Another option if the Bengals want to upgrade the guard position(s) in free agency is instead of bringing in a free agent to replace Cappa at RG they use that 8 million toward a LG to replace Volson and they bring in someone like Teven Jenkins at LG. Following this approach you do upgrade the offensive line through free agency but you get a proven LG so that allows you to also cut Volson. I am not sure the Bengals can afford to fix both guard positions in free agency because of the cost of two free agent guards. Cutting Cappa doesnt mean you need to bring in a RG. The Bengals could instead bring in a proven LG like Jenkins.

I keep hearing Kevin Zeitler's name being mentioned.

Zeitler would be an upgrade over Cappa and would make the line better.
Signing Zeitler we could have Volson/Ford/Kirkland at LG with Zeitler at RG then you might look to the draft to upgrade the LG position.
The other option would be to sign Teven Jenkins at LG and have Kirkland/Ford play RG and you look to the draft to upgrade the RG position.
The Bengals have options. They dont necessarily need to bring in a free agent RG. Bringing in a free agent LG could accomplish something similar plus you can get rid of Volson and save 3.3 million in cap space.
This is assuming the Bengals also get Ford signed as depth but if not someone like Kirkland could take over the LG or RG position while you look to the draft to upgrade

That "good thing" is they have Volson on the cheap for one more year, so they'll keep him as depth if anything this season.
I could see them adding one guy in FA to replace Cappa, and either a dude in FA or draft to replace/compete with Volson this year.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs
Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

Im not sure how it's being calculated but both spotrac and over the cap have Volson's cap hit at around 3.5 - 3.8 million this year. If cut, Volson would save the Bengals about 3.5 million in cap space.

If they're completely strapped for cash that they need an extra ~$3.5 mill, I could see it, but otherwise I can't see them cutting both starting OGs unless they really, really had to.
Volson's cost isn't so high that it's out of the realm of a depth piece who has plenty of starting experience in the offense and can jump in pretty easily to give competent (albeit not great) snaps.
As much as I haven't liked Volson, I haven't felt Volson is quite to level of scariness as Mike Jordan.

Personally it's less about the money and more about I just don't want the possibility of him "blocking" for Burrow ever again.
I don't ever want him to be in a position to "jump in" and start stepping all over Burrow and his fellow OL's feet.

I am flat out confused on Spotrac's numbers on Volson. He signed a 4.1 contract and they have hin at 3.5 million or more as a cap hit in 2025. I would love for a cap expert to explain how he is making in the final year almost the entire 3 year contract he signed.
