Proven Performance Escalator
It's a CBA thing that increases underpaid rookie contract guys who are starters, mostly important for later round picks. Play enough snaps and you get an automatic pre-calculated raise.

Volson played 55%+ of the offensive snaps in each of his first 3 years but didn't make a Pro Bowl so he's a category 2. His base salary becomes the right-of-first-refusal tender ($3.26m in 2025) + $250k.... there's your $3.5m.
It's basically a thing to make it so being a later round pick that ends up playing a decent or large amount of snaps doesn't pay significantly less in their 4th year than a UDFA in their 4th year getting tendered as a RFA.

He's gonna be traded or cut.

Would prefer Becton and Will Fries at this point to free up the Draft to go Defense while adding a TE and a RB.
Agreed. Restructure Hubbard's deal if we want to keep him around. He will work his ass off like always and as a backup he wouldn't
be hurting us. We need another starter opposite of Trey though.
Becton and Fries both would be amazing. I like Daniels as well.

More realistic but good option to replace Cappa - James Daniels.
Still should command $10+ mill though.
Bargain quality replacement for Cappa - Dalton Risner.
Risner should be able to be had for under $5 mill APY.
Rather have Will Fries and Trey Smith was tagged we're not touching him.

I still think they'll sign one legit guard early and see what falls into place. After the extensions and money is spent on the DL they may sign a bargain guard. More likely, I think they'll try to get Ford to backup tackle and possibly compete with a rookie and Volson for the spot. I want more but money is on this.

Isn't Fries basically just OL Dax Hill? Drafted at a position, moved to a different position, then was good for 5 games in 2024 before getting hurt but otherwise hasn't really done much in his career to make you confident?

Thanks for the update. I knew they have escalators, but always thought it was money paid out of the league pool.
At 3.5 million, good chance he gets cut after the draft. This may have put him out of job in the NFL. The 55% number is very low in my opinion, to me it should be based on the position played. WR's for example the 55% number fair. Not so much for OG's who can be injured for 45% of the snaps and get a raise.
Please use 2025 free agency to fix the trenches, not the draft!!!!!!!!

This is a good sign. Volson should be next or maybe keep him as backup.

Not surprised by the move. Surprised at the timing. Definitely noteworthy for the timing to be outside of the norm with no replacement.

It's 55%+ for EVERY ONE of the first 3 years. So 1 major injury early in any season and you miss it. Don't play much your rookie year and you miss it. It's actually pretty tough to hit.
There are only 14 guys from the entire 2022 draft (2nd-7th round) who played at least 55% of the snaps every year without making a Pro Bowl on the original ballot (a Pro Bowl negates the need for any %s, you immediately are a Level 3, but it can't be as a Pro Bowl alternate). Even if you add the Pro Bowl guys you're only up to 22 guys (11 of them 2nd rounders) out of 230 picks.
Our 2023 and 2024 2nd-7th round draft classes are already out of the running for 55%+ each of the first 3 years.

This move makes me happy. Not because I hate Cappa or anything. He was a stand up guy who played pretty well before that late season injury 3 years ago, decently 2 years ago, and teally fell off a cliff last year.
It makes me happy because it means we cannot stand pat at guard. Which was something I was afraid of.
Surprised we cut him before having a replacement lined up. Most of the top FA guards are RGs (Smith, Daniels, Fries, Zeitler, Becton).

Yep. If a guy sucks ass enough, keeping him as a backup and paying him less doesn't make him suck any less, just less often, which is still too much.

Volson likely gone or replaced as a starter as well.

Ugh...
But who am i to judge!? Maybe a guy who's almost 27, going into his 4th year can be taught to not be such a big, flaming pile of shit!

Uhhh no. Fries PFF has been in the 70's his entire career. It was a little higher last year before he was hurt. But no their is a huge difference between the 2.

Someone got hurt in 2022 and he started the last half of the season. IN 2023 he started all 17 games and had a 86.9 PFF and then in 2024 he got hurt after 5 games and it was an 84.9 PFF. He hasn't moved around he's played RG and killed it.

That's what I thought as well. I thought it was a bonus the league paid out. I didnt realize teams had that go against their salary cap.
I wonder if this is the same program as the NFL's performance-based pay program or if these are separate programs which is why I am a little confused on it.
