Just a FYI. on Risner. Does the contract dictate good or does his past performance? His numbers are far better than Cappa, Volson and Ford.
https://vikingswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/vikings/2025/02/24/2025-nfl-free-agency-projected-value-of-dalton-risners-contract/80839071007/
Risner is an above-average pass blocker, receiving a 76.2 grade from PFF last year. However, he's a below-average run blocker, getting a 57.4 grade from them in 2024.
Please use 2025 free agency to fix the trenches, not the draft!!!!!!!!

Guard is the type of position where you can find good starters in the 4th or 5th. However the chances of them being good starters from week 1 are low. Giving them half a season, a year as a back-up is a much better way to go.
I think this has been a big part of the Bengals’ interior problems. Players like Jordan, Volson were chucked in as soon as they showed any promise. This didn’t set them up for long term success.
ps At the moment I think their best O-line will be with Karras at G and Matt Lee at C.
Good points. Scherff would be a good bridge candidate as you say and Matt Lee at Center might be in the cards while moving Ted to LG.
Makes me feel a little better about not getting 2 Guards. Just cannot have Volson or Ford starting, period.

I am not the one in panic mode. I see starting guards with pick #17 in the draft. You know, same thing KC did when they drafted 5th round guard Trey Smith.
You not panicking should provide comfort or relief to absolutely no one. And I’m not panicking. I’ve been thru this w/the bungles more times than I care to count. It’s more of a sad lament. And it’s causing me to make a decision as to whether or not continuing to ride this train is worthwhile. They have a bigger opportunity to win a SB now than they ever have before, yet they’re content to waste our stars prime years with an abundance of frugality, incompetence and passivity.
As to which ones would be considered “good,” I’d be fine with Scherff and possibly Risner. Far from great but both would be upgrades to our current fixtures.
If you see something suspicious, say something suspicious.

I know most do not view it thisxway, but we have signed 4 defensive FAs, 3 9f whom are DL: Hill, Ossai, & Slaton. Plus Burks to replace ADG as LB3. We spent $24 mil on the d-line.
Hill was a top 5 FA DT everywhere I looked. Gesicki a top 3 TE. ESPN & NFL grade Slaton as a top 3 (or top) run stopper in the league. Burks started the Eagles SB run and balled out and graded 80+ at PFF, regular and post season.
Now, we have totally whiffed on Big 3 extensions and a Burrow extension so far. And on guards. If we'd have gotted most/all of that done, we'd had had more ammo to play in the deeper end of the pool on D in FA. And do more than bring back Gesicki & Perine on O.
But Jenkins & Scherff are still out there. Trey, Tee, and Chase are still in stripes. Joe is still willing to restructure. It looks as if 25 or so of the top 100 FA's are still out there. There will be more cuts of quality players. This week and post draft.
I give us a firm D atm, but if we land Jenkins it creeps up towards C. Jenkins + Scherff would be pushing C+/B.
That getting some Big 3/Joe B re done and making another move or two with the $$ is B+ to A territory.
Nice breakdown Ike. Agree that we can still make the moves to salvage this Offseason. The Draft will be Defensive heavy as that is the
strength of the Draft and our needs with a new Defensive staff. Bring in a Guard, extend our guys and it isn't so bad.

Glad we didn't bring in Larry O after this.
Plus BJ Hill significantly outplayed him after Larry O left here. We got the much better DT.

I just saw this info. Does that mean these 2 add ons for the Bills may lose strength in 2025 since they were juicing?

Bills had to know (hopefully) but that is comedy given I'm sure their fans didn't, and if it was the Bengals we'd be all over the FO for this.

Bills knew about both. Ogunjobi they found out only after they came to a financial agreement, but before he signed, and they decided to go ahead with the signing anyway because of the dearth of DTs left in free agency. Hoecht they knew about before free agency.

I think Scherff would be a good fit cheaper than Jenkins and has been very solid. As the roster is currently constructed we’d probably need two rookies to have immediate impacts at guard and defensive line. We need to add a quality starter we can’t rely on rookies. If there’s an injury at tackle Ford is are swing tackle. We only have 6 picks we need 2 guards, DE , DT , linebacker and safety.

I think we see Chase and Tee contracts soon. I don’t think we’re going to go get a guard. I think they roll with Volson and add a guard in round 2. DE round 1, g round 2, LB round 3, def round 4-6.
I think we enter the year with the exact same offense as last year, just more expensive and a rookie guard.
I don’t see any more big signings coming on D. Maybe a player/contract to to the level of what Stone (barf) was.

In an ideal scenario.
A guard, or preferably 2.
Calais Campbell. A guy who can move inside/out. Can bring a little juice to the pass rush game. Incredible leadership.
Von Miller/Z Smith, or someone in this range. Another leader on defense. Older, but can also contribute.
It would be great if the bengals had 4-5 guys, outside of Trey that could contribute 5+ sacks, keeping guys fresh. It’s wild to think a team like the eagles, middle of the road sack total (41), had 5 more sacks than the bengals, but no one had more than 8.
FWIW - Campbell signed last year a 1 year $2,000,000 deal.
I’m assuming a veteran pass rusher is somewhere in the $5,000,000-$8,00,000 range. Hopefully less.
Probably high here, but these moves would really open Up the draft.

No you're right, this is who we should be. I think the WRs inking deals to free up 2025M allows them to take care of Trey. The timing is critical that we look like a team that will pat you for doing your job well even if you're old.
Then we're back to the "Burrow tax" (really a discount) that Gesicki mentioned. We want a Campbell or Smith to see themselves as the missing piece that can chase a ring in Cincy. Like Riley Rieff started and we assumed we would tap into a pool of serviceable ring chasers.
If Jenkins goes to Seattle there are only 3 reasonable upgrade guards but getting one is a huge priority. Then I'm happy with any ring chasing DL so yeah Campbell's versatility especially as the 3rd down UT would be huge. You could take an Edge rusher early even if they are situational. Really salvages the offseason. Depending on how low the 1st year base numbers fir the WRs are and if Burrow restructures (though Tobin sounded against it) they should be able to do most of what you have.
