You know that it has to be the dullest part of the offseason when comparisons like this happen. Rang is a respected draft analyst and has been for years, let's hope that the similarity he's seeing comes to fruition.

Quote:CINCINNATI — Dylan Fairchild could be a very important part of the Bengals' offense this decade. FOX Sports NFL Draft analyst Rob Rang thinks of former Bengals Pro Bowl guard Max Montoya when he thinks about Fairchild.
Montoya is one of the greatest players in Bengals history, ranking 11th in franchise history with a 94 Approximate Value on Pro Football Reference.
"Cincinnati has dedicated a lot of draft picks and money to its skill positions and is now hoping that Fairchild can step right into a starting role as a rookie," Rang wrote. "He was overshadowed for much of his time at Georgia, and the megawatt star power in Cincinnati guarantees the same will occur with the Bengals, even if he plays well as a rookie. I like his bulk, strength, agility, and mentality and think he’ll prove a longtime starter, perhaps emerging as the best guard for the Bengals since Montoya, the only player at this position ever selected to the Pro Bowl from Cincinnati."
Now, this is more of a fun thought exercise than Rang saying Fairchild is the next Max Montoya. Bengals fans would surely welcome that kind of development after the team's cycled through guard after guard for much of the past decade.
Fairchild will battle it out for a chance to start at one of the guard spots in training camp.
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

That is big shoes, he is one of my favorites and when he played I was a Browns fan. I always thought he was under rated and he seemed to dominate the Browns DL.

Yep. Just give me another Clint Boling. They’re so overdue to hit on an IOL.

Yeah, Montoya is probably our best Guard of all time. But he was a mauler kind of like Fairchild was at Georgia. Fairchild is very physical
and knows how to stay low which right there is an upgrade over Volson at LG. If Dylan can stay balanced and low he could be a good one
for us right off the bat. There is a reason he is already with the 1's.

Dave Lapham had a video with Scott Peters talking about building a dominant OL. The road to dominance runs through competence. And I would just be happy if the team would stop settling for incompetence with upside.

Like most Bengals fans, I have high hopes for Fairchild and all of our draft picks. But comparing him to one of our all time great Offensive Linemen before his first NFL snap is more than just a bit of a stretch. Summer doldrums.

CJ is a joke.
But the quote does not compare Faichild to Montoya (though the CJ author is either too dumb to know it or just wanted a clickbait headline).
The quote says Fairchild could be the best G we've had since Montoya, who is the only PB guard this franchise has ever had.
He's comparing him to every G since Montoya. And COULD is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

I agree about CJ, however that isn't a CJ article. The comparison was made by respected NFL draft analyst Rob Rang, currently of Fox Sports, I believe that he used to be with CBS (back when he and Brugler had that place humming).

I liked the pick and feel he is as good or better than Ratledge who was drafted earlier. I have high hopes for him, but unlike most, I think Volson surprises us in 2025 as he takes a huge leap from bad/average NFL starter to a solid starter.
I think our OL will be one of the most improved areas in 2025.
I start my analysis of our team with the prior year record, last year we were 9-8. Then what were thr major weaknesses? OG on offense by far was an issue. We had 1 vet starter who killed our OL perfromnce Cappa and he was cut. He was flat out horrid so can a rookie or vet step in and be better. I say yes, the question becomes how much better.
On defense we had a ton of weakness. The weakest is debatable, but DB's including the saftey position is my pick. Some injury and some performance. We have tons of questions still with our young CB's Hill, Turner and Britt. I a no fan of Stone nor Battle. Battle is OK, but don't think he will ever be a star safety. Can this group be better? Then there is DT where we lost Hill, Rankins and had 2 rookies. I think Slayton shocks some people and the rookies both get better helping our interior run and pass defensive line.
We will see, but I think our roster is better than some give it credit, but back to Fairchild, we need to hit big on a guard, I hope he is the one.

Based on what? Ratledge was universally ranked as the better prospect.

No, it wasn't. You continue to make the same, dumb (mistake?) CJ did. If you think they are a joke, then you are a joke, too. You are doing the same thing. And you are continuing to do it and defending it after it has been pointed out what you are doing.
I will walk you through it again.
1) Rang says:
“Cincinnati has dedicated a lot of draft picks and money to its skill positions and is now hoping that Fairchild can step right into a starting role as a rookie. He was overshadowed for much of his time at Georgia, and the megawatt star power in Cincinnati guarantees the same will occur with the Bengals, even if he plays well as a rookie. 2) That isn't comparing him to Montoya. That is saying, perhaps, he could be be best guard SINCE Montoya. That is a comparison to every guard after Max, not to him.
3) CJ author, either being too dumb to know what comparison means, or wanting a clickbait headline, posts an article with the headline about comparing Fairchild to Montoya.
4) A bunch of folks, who either only read the headline and not the actual quote, or also lack the understanding of what comparison means or the ability to recognize one when they see one, repost the initial, completely inaccurate headline.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/dylan-fairchild-compared-to-bengals-legend-max-montoya/ar-AA1HsH6b
5) This fact gets pointed out to you by multiple posters in this thread, and you double down on your initial mistake.
Look, I hate to be a jerk, but I think it is necessary here. I was nice the first time, but patience is wearing thin. I get that some folks do not excel at reading comprehension, so I guess I will have to give an example.
Comparison of Mahommes to Brady: "Patrick Mahommes is better than Tom Brady."
Not a comparison of Mahommes to Brady: "Since Brady retired, Mahommes is the best QB in the NFL."
That is a comparison of Mahommes to every other QB in the league since Brady retired. NOT to Brady himself. See the difference?
Now try it with Montoya and Fairchild!

Peters and the other coaches/ scouts indicated they went down to see Ratledge, but the one showing out was Fairchild.
But you have to factor in the spin effect. I think they really liked Fairchild and Ratledge both, but liked Knight more than Ratledge.
Hope it all shakes out. But if it had been me I would have taken Ratledge and Fairchild.
Having said that I'm pretty psyched about Knight. I think he's going to have been underrated and is going to shine.

To be fair, I did lead off the OP with
