I believe, as others have said, they need to send him back down to develop a 3rd pitch that he can throw for strikes. A two pitch starter just doesn't work.

There was a time I thought McLain was the one of the bunch that was gonna develop into a bona-fide star. Perhaps not?

The problem with so called strike out pitchers, is the get into problem with high pitch count, then get pulled in the 5th or 6th inning. Leaving it to an over worked bullpen to close it out for the win.
Greene is also in this category.
Abbott on the other hand is a pitcher, not a thrower, trying to strike everyone out.

Abbott is my favorite current Reds pitcher.
If Reds sign him to a veteran deal, I'll be looking to get his jersey.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs
Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

Strikeouts are fun, but Burns needs to perhaps dial it down a few mphs and get better location so that he doesn't continually get tagged for a few runs and ran out of there before 6.0 IP.
Burns has only made it to 6.0 IP once in 6 starts.
The slider looks nice and the fastball is fast, but the placement needs to be better.
Burns uses his fastball 57% of the time and his slider 35% of the time, with only 8% of his pitches going toward a combo of a changeup and curve.
As others have said, he needs to develop a third pitch and use it more, reducing the reliance on the fastball so much.
I'd prefer he learn to throw a sinker, as that could be valuable in GABP, but maybe throw the changeup more if anything.
We may not need to worry about this (early) next year though, as Greene, Abbott, and Lodolo are locked into rotational spots, Singer might be back (although is he worth the likely $10+ mill he'll expect for his 4th ARB and final year under contract?), and Lowder should hopefully be ready to go by camp.
That may allow Burns to start the season at AAA and focus on his pitch diversity.
Burns may also be better suited for the BP, as he seems to do a lot better against the order the first time but they start to catch on the 2nd and especially 3rd time through the order.

This is what I feared for Burns. They call him up, then can’t score (m)any runs for the kid. He probably feels like he has to be perfect. Greene needs to get back so Burns can go back to AAA and refine his craft some more. He’d be a good BP arm if we make the playoffs, as others have said, he does well the first time through.

They also called up Hinds.

Yes McLain was out but how much you wanna bet if that was a Dodger runner the call would stand?

One big swing by Fraley and now we're back in a new game.

Green WAS in that category. He made quite a leap last season and so far when healthy this season.
Nice job of battling by Lodolo. He pretty much went straight at them.
So does Barlow throw anything other than a slider?
And Ashcraft chokes. Gee. A walk to a .195 hitter comes around to score. Say it isn't so.

The Reds suck with runners in scoring position. If this goes extra innings, it’s over. They haven’t scored in 6 extra inning games this year.
