Obviously the biggest difference in all of these is that only one former office holder denied he had them, said they were planted, said he declassified them, said he was set up and and said it he did absolutely nothing wrong.

Guilty of a felony, 10 years in prison.

We need both reform on overclassifying materials that really don't need it and then a (consistently and equally enforced) crackdown on mishandling the rightfully classified files.

Lawyers for former President Donald Trump turned over to the government a folder containing classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago estate, ABC News reported on Friday.

Sources told the outlet a laptop belonging to a current aide to Trump was also given to federal officials. James Trusty, an attorney for Trump said the documents in question had been copied electronically to the computer.
ABC News reported:

Quote:Sources said the discovery occurred in mid-January as Trump’s team was searching through additional boxes amid the Department of Justice’s ongoing efforts to have Trump’s attorneys verify that Trump no longer still has classified documents in his possession.
The material was discovered in the Mar-a-Lago complex, and not in a storage facility within the complex that housed hundreds of classified documents before them being seized in August 2022, the sources said.

The feds’ latest retrieval of classified documents comes after the FBI executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago in August when agents found thousands of documents, some of which were marked classified. Agents descended on the property a few months after a lawyer for Trump signed a letter to the Department of Justice stating no government documents remained on site.
That turned out not to be the case.

President Joe Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence were also found to have been in possession of classified materials they were supposed to give to the National Archives. In Biden’s case, he had documents dating back to his time as both vice president and as a senator.

On this thread the "lib playbook" is apparently to discuss Trump's illegal withdrawal and retention of classified documents.

"Biden is an old pile of crap" doesn't seem like the kind of claim which merits investigation by our legal and intel services.

Report: It Sure Sounds Like Trump’s Lawyer Gave the DOJ Evidence He Obstructed Justice!

Evan Corcoran gave special counsel Jack Smith 50 pages of handwritten notes as part of the classified documents investigation.
BY
MAY 22, 2023

If you’ve been keeping tabs on the Justice Department’s investigation into Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents, you know that things are not going particularly well for the ex-president. Last month, we learned that special counsel Jack Smith had uncovered  “significant” evidence that the former guy had obstructed justice. We also learned that the National Archives and Records Administration was reportedly set to turn over “16 records that show Trump…had knowledge of the correct declassification process while he was president” and did not responsibly act upon it. And today now brings a new report that the ex-president was expressly told he could not hold onto any classified documents following a subpoena last May from the DOJ—just another bit of counsel he obviously did not take.

The Guardian reports that Smith’s team has obtained approximately 50 pages of dictated notes from Trump attorney Evan Corcoran. These notes reveal that Corcoran advised the ex-president against retaining any government documents after the subpoena was issued (according to CNN, Trump point-blank asked if he could fight the DOJ’s attempt to take back the documents). They also show that Corcoran told Trump’s longtime valet, Walt Nauta, “about the subpoena before he started looking for classified documents because Corcoran needed him to unlock the storage room.” (As a reminder, Nauta is the Trump aide who was seen on camera moving boxes at Mar-a-Lago both before and after the May subpoena; perhaps crucially, people familiar with the matter have either said that Nauta outright told investigators that he was moving the boxes at Trump’s behest, or that he merely implied it.) Corcoran’s notes also reportedly describe “how Nauta had offered to help him go through the boxes” as well as “Trump’s facial expressions and reactions whenever they discussed the subpoena”—the details of which apparently “irritated Trump,” who only found out about them after the Smith’s team obtained them.

During his search in June, Corcoran uncovered approximately 40 classified documents in the Mar-a-Lago storage room, and then had fellow Trump attorney Christina Bobb sign a written statement saying everything had been turned over to the government. However, the FBI’s August raid—which turned up an additional 101 classified documents—showed that this was obviously untrue. (Bobb had insisted on adding the caveat “to the best of my knowledge,” which does not change the fact that the statement was incorrect, and there were still many documents at the Palm Beach resort.)

As The Guardian notes, “the previously unreported warning conveyed to Trump by…Corcoran could be significant in the criminal investigation surrounding Trump’s handling of classified materials given it shows he knew about his subpoena obligations.” They add to other evidence obtained by Smith that Trump appeared to know exactly what he was doing—and why he wasn’t supposed to be doing it—both when he took the documents in question out of the White House and when he decided to hold onto them in violation of the subpoena. (On May 24, NARA is scheduled to hand over more than a dozen records to Smith showing “whether, why, and how you should declassify certain classified records.”)

Corcoran did not respond to The Guardian’s request for comment. A spokesperson for Trump previously called the criminal investigation “nothing more than a targeted, politically motivated witch-hunt against President Trump that is concocted to meddle in an election and prevent the American people from returning him to the White House.” Anyway, you can probably understand why the ex-president would like to defund the DOJ in a second term.

More proof Dems are WEAPONIZING the DOJ!

Their strategy is to uphold the rule of law, knowing that Trump's reckless disregard for it could land him in jail.

Unfair since this tactic never seems to work against Biden or Obama or even Hilary.

Because the courts are biased towards factual evidence, convicting them of crimes is as hard as proving the election was stolen.

Meanwhile, the Biden crime family gets away with everything no one can prove.

If Trump wins the election though, we have a shot at setting law and government on a different footing.

We won't have to prove what we always already "know."

TOPLINE

Two employees of former President Donald Trump moved boxes of papers the day before Federal Bureau of Investigation agents searched for and removed classified documents from Trump’s Florida home in an unannounced raid in August 2022, the Washington Post reported Thursday, days after reports circulated that Special Counsel Jack Smith was wrapping up his investigation into Trump’s potential mishandling of those documents.

KEY FACTS
Trump aides separately conducted a “dress rehearsal” to practice moving sensitive papers, even before he was subpoenaed in May 2022, the Post reportedciting unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

Prosecutors obtained evidence that shows that Trump stored classified documents in a visible place in his office, occasionally showing them to others, the Post reported.

The timing of the “dress rehearsal” and the moving of boxes was an indication of possible obstruction, the sources told the Post.

Trump, who declared his candidacy for the presidency in November, is facing multiple criminal investigations—in two states and at the federal level—that could result in charges and trials throughout his campaign.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Trump’s potential indictment in the matter. The report indicates special counsel Smith’s criminal investigation into whether Trump mishandled those classified documents is coming to an end. Earlier this week the Wall Street Journal reported Trump’s associates are preparing for his indictment in the matter, though it’s unclear exactly when and if that will happen.

KEY BACKGROUND
The initial August raid of Mar-A-Lago was part of a broader investigation into documents Trump took with him to his Florida home after he left the White House. In February 2022, the National Archives said it had “arranged for the transport” of 15 boxes that were being improperly stored at Mar-A-Lago and later revealed some of those boxes included classified information. The National Archives then asked the DOJ to investigate the matter. The raid happened a few months later as investigators wanted to determine if anything hadn’t been turned over to officials, particularly after someone familiar with the documents reportedly tipped off officials that more documents were left behind.

CHIEF CRITIC
Earlier this week, Trump’s lawyers, John Rowley and James Trusty, wrote a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, requesting a meeting to discuss Smith’s ongoing investigations. Along with the investigation into Trump’s potential mishandling of classified documents, Smith is also investigating Trump’s role in attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. In the letter, shared by Trump on Truth Social, Trump’s lawyers claimed, “No president of the United States has ever, in the history of our country, been baselessly investigated in such outrageous and unlawful fashion.”

TANGENT
Trump is facing a number of criminal probes, including one in New York from earlier this year that resulted in the former president being charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. Prosecutors allege Trump made a series of hush money deals to conceal alleged affairs with three separate women. In Georgia, Trump faces potential charges of election interference as the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office continues its investigation into allegations that Trump and his allies pressured state officials to undo his loss in the state.

and now we know even more of the story...

Trump is recorded as saying he had classified documents and knowing they were still classified

https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/31/politics/trump-tape-classified-document-iran-milley/index.html

Quote:

Federal prosecutors have obtained an audio recording of a summer 2021 meeting in which former President Donald Trump acknowledges he held onto a classified Pentagon document about a potential attack on Iran, multiple sources told CNN, undercutting his argument that he declassified everything.
The recording indicates Trump understood he retained classified material after leaving the White House, according to multiple sources familiar with the investigation. On the recording, Trump’s comments suggest he would like to share the information but he’s aware of limitations on his ability post-presidency to declassify records, two of the sources said.

Notable legal clouds that continue to hang over Donald Trump in 2023

CNN has not listened to the recording, but multiple sources described it. One source said the relevant portion on the Iran document is about two minutes long, and another source said the discussion is a small part of a much longer meeting.

Quote:The recording that’s now in the hands of prosecutors shows they are not only looking at Trump’s actions regarding classified documents recovered from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, but also at what happened at Bedminster a year earlier.

The meeting in which Trump discussed the Iran document with others happened shortly after The New Yorker published a story by Susan Glasser detailing how, in the final days of Trump’s presidency, Milley instructed the Joint Chiefs to ensure Trump issued no illegal orders and that he be informed if there was any concern. The story infuriated Trump.

Quote:Glasser reported that in the months following the election, Milley repeatedly argued against striking Iran and was concerned Trump “might set in motion a full-scale conflict that was not justified.” Milley and others talked Trump out of taking such a drastic action, according to the New Yorker story.

On the recording and in response to the story, Trump brings up the document, which he says came from Milley. Trump told those in the room that if he could show it to people, it would undermine what Milley was saying, the sources said. One source says Trump refers to the document as if it is in front of him.

You mean they caught Trump talking on tape about how much he loves Jesus and the Bible and our veterans and the evil left used AI to replace it with a bunch of incriminating FAKE NEWS!  Either that or they had Biden and Hillary admitting to selling top secret documents to our enemies and used computers to turn it into Trump saying it.  That one fits the narrative better.

Side note, years ago I recall a woman I somewhat knew telling me that she "sleepwalked" and drove her car 70 miles to the casino in Pittsburgh, lost a bunch of money, and then drove back home and tried to hide it from her husband.  Just figured I'd share more stuff I've heard in my life that is total BS.  Now that level of BS is presidential.  I tells ya.

When the tapes with the most damning recording are released, you know that'll be the GOP defense.  It was A1 and not really him.  BUT>>> Of course,  that'll all blow up when he gets in front of a crowd and admits to all of it b/c he thinks the law doesn't apply to him due to his malignant narcissism.

Seems like at this point there could be strong and weak versions of dissemination.

The weak version is he was just showing documents to people to brag about his power and connections, like when, at a table at Mar a Lago with Xi, he made a flourish of ordering a strike on Syria--over chocolate cake, with all manner of civilians and who knows who else listening and taking pictures. Perhaps he was defending himself from the implication he almost started a war with Iran--proving news about him was "fake."

The strong version is he wanted to (or actually did) use the documents to leverage something from the Saudis or Russians or other interests, or damage someone within our government (like Milley, who may have saved us from a war with Iran).

Either way, this is illegal, criminal dissemination--giving access to people not supposed to have access, risking disclosure of methods and lethal (for them) disclosure of sources.

Of course, the severity of the breech also depends on who was in the room and the date this occurred. Even if they were all former FBI and CIA heads, this still makes clear how unfit Trump was to EVER be in charge of the Executive, how little he understands the nature of intel and law, and how poor his judgment is.

This will explode conservative as well as liberal heads.
