I somehow feel the issue with Trey is not just the AAV, but also the length of the offer. Are the Bengals looking for really a one year deal wrapped in a 3 year contract?

He has 33% less tackles since '21 than Hunter.
He has 21% more sacks since '21 than Hunter. 

He has 5% less tackles since '21 than Watt. 
He has 31% more sacks since '21 than Watt. 

He has 19% less tackles since '21 than Parsons.
He has 32% more sacks since '21 than Parsons. 

This year, being paid on the "extension" he will make;
47% less than Garrett.
41% less than Hunter.
41% less than Crosby.
38% less than N.Bosa.
25% less than J.Hines-Allen. 
25% less than B.Burns.
25% less than TJ Watt (before impending new contract) this should rise to Garrett levels soon.

Thats 7 guys that make at least 25% more than Trey. 4 guys that make at least 38% more than Trey and 9 guys that make at least 12% more than Trey.

I think things would have been a hell of a lot better right now if Katie hadn't gone to the media first with her "He should be happy with what we offer" nonsense. For all his many faults, you would NEVER have heard Mike Brown going to the press with that type of line. Nor would he have promised that if he accepts a 1 year and play well they'd take care of him next offseason. He'd have been upfront about reality rather than trying to massage the situation.

There's also the fact he got the opportunity to see what other teams would be willing to offer him as a contract, so when you see teams are willing to pay you a whole lot more it makes it even harder to settle for less when the only thing holding you back is the Bengals valuing you higher in draft pick demand than they're willing to pay you.

And again, every time you just throw out that 28 number I still feel the need to continue to point out that's only a rumored offer, and we have no idea how long the offer is or how much of that offer is guaranteed which means the two most important pieces of information are missing. Plus the $28m would still put him 8th among edges and only making 70% of the top of the market and 78.6% of what Danielle Hunter is making. They're the same age and Trey is better and more productive.

It's not crazy talk. Last year, Maxx wasn't even top 20 in total pressures so he's not the most disruptive. 

And by the highly subjective PFF grade, he's only (T)14th in run defense, (T)34th in tackles, 23rd in stops and he's middle of the pack in missed tackle percentage.

A lot of great points here as usual. Great post, cannot really argue with anything TLL.

That is really true about Danielle Hunter as well. Same age and less productive plus you are correct we don't know the details in the offer.

That is really surprising to me, thanks Rfaulk. Still Maxx is a better run stopper and plays tons more snaps. But yeah, according to what you
say here Trey is a better pass rusher which doesn't surprise me. Trey is one of the best in this area, he is just getting up there in age.

At some point the Bengals can pull the 28 mil offer off the table if he waits too long.

Everyone keeps saying Trey needs to just take the 28m APY but that is 12m LESS PER YEAR than the top of the Edge Market. I am not going to hold anything against Trey in light of that. I'm also not holding it against thr Bengals who are obviously not comfortable giving a long term guaranteed deal to a player headed into the twilight of their career.

I place most of the blame on Trey Hendrickson's agent who is obviously very bad at his job. I looked at his client list a couple weeks back and no one on would even come close to a Hendrickson contract. So I expect they are trying to get as much money as possible too.

The agent negotiates and talks on behalf of the player. Hendrickson is a grown man, probably a smarty guy. He knows what he’s doing and these are he and his families decisions. He’s not pressured or persuaded by an agent to turn down 28M and sit out a year. He’s doing that because he wants to do that.

Do you like winning games? Or is that not important? We need his talent desperately. He’s not a cancer. He’s well liked and respected, a Christian. Quite the opposite of a cancer. He’s probably led people to Jesus. But yeah, we need his talent on this roster. Our front office can’t even get a rookie contract right for Stewart. They messed up on Chase deal last year. Messes up on Tee deal last year. But they’re right on Hendrickson?

We miss the playoffs guaranteed if we don’t have Trey

Who signed Hendrickson's 60-million dollar contract and was extremely happy about it???
Who then wanted to re-negotiate, and signed a new extension with more money, and was extremely happy about it????
Who then demanded another contract re-negotiation, when he wasn't even eligible for it???
Who now threatens to sit out the last year of the deal he signed, even though the Bengals offered him a 12 million dollar raise this year that they did not have to???

What in the blue blazes makes you think he's going to be happy next year with any deal they give him this year??? He and his incompetent agent put him in this situation. And evidently every time the cap goes up, he thinks he should get a new deal. If they gave him what he wants today and he signed, as soon as Twatt gets his new deal Hendrickson will want more again.

This team has proven even with TH's best seasons that they can finish 3rd and 4th in the division with lousy defenses. Could some of that be that they got nothing on the other side at DE? Possibly. Could some be they got almost nothing from an interior pass rush? Possibly. Could some of that be that Trey is a one trick pony in that he's not good against the run? Maybe so. They can finish 3rd/4th again without him, imo, so he's got very little leverage.  

Obviously, Cinci. is putting their marbles in being an elite offensive team and outscoring teams and they made him a very nice offer. I'm not saying TH is wrong here but it is what it is at this point. He won't come close to that money if he sits out a year and would be 3 months shy of being 32 when the next season begins.

Trey hired the agent and has stuck with him, blame Trey. Is the guy related to Trey or something?
