By that logic you could say the team doesn’t need Joe or Jamar because we weren’t a Super Bowl contender last year with them, so why pay them 50 and 40 million/year? Trey is far and away the best player on defense, and his play merits a better contract. Without Trey this is inarguably a bottom 3 d-line. No pass rush will pressure the also weak and thin secondary. Not having Trey is not a recipe for success, nor is trying to strong arm your first round draft pick. But the Family gonna Family, we’ve watched their clown show for 30 plus years.
If they dangled a 3 year extension at Trey near 96 million we’d probably be talking about something else…

I usually scroll by your posts for a reason. I've even caught myself about to roll you up and smoke you, but I normally pass. Simply put we were one game away from going to Buffalo and being in the tournament. Buffalo fans were ecstatic that Cincy wasn't coming to town! The point is, yes, we were a SB contender last season.
We will be in the mix again this season barring an injury to QB1.

They have not reached a conclusion to this point, and ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter believes he knows why that is the case. On an appearance on Unsportsmanlike, Schefter spoke about what he thinks the holdup in the contract issue is.
“I think the biggest issue right now is the length of years in the contract,” Schefter said . “Again, Trey Hendrickson and T.J. Watt, they want more years, the team wants to give fewer years. Both players are in their 30s, so for the players, it’s about getting as much guaranteed money as you can over a longer period of time.”
Schefter compares Watt to Trey Hendrickson, who will also garner significant money soon. The age of the players themselves is also a large part of it, as teams do not want to be stuck with the largest contract for a defender in the history of the league if they do not age as gracefully as they have to this point. It will certainly be a tough situation for both parties, as they still seem quite far from an eventual conclusion.

I brought this up before as a possible barometer on how we should feel about the Trey situation, but I'd rather see Watt walk from the Steelers then stay. I think he's more likely to hurt us as a Steelers than make us grateful they blew a bunch of money on him.

Some people dwell in the past and see the glass always half empty..over the course of the past four years the bengals have a top ten winning percentage...they sell out every home game..top 5 in national viewership..superbowl and then afc championsip game appearances..we have a generational quarterback in burrow with a great offense. The Brown family are doing alot of things correctly....i could care less if hendrickson stays or leaves..team will survive and this ad nauseum debate about such is growing stale..have a great afternoon

Pretty much.I am glad they found the bucks to sign higgins ..yet..and lets get real..tee suffers from chronic hamstring injuries and misses a biatload of snaps..so we will see....they did sign hendrickson and he is still under contract with the bengals this year

well tee would have still been under contract also.. i feel with the quality of play of Burrow , Chase and Brown, this team would be ok without Higgins but to me Tre is a bigger loss to the defense so hope we can work out a compromise and extend his contract since i have a feeling he is going to sitout

Did he? How much is guaranteed? That will be. the key to see how much is real money and how much is easily removed by cutting him in later years 3 and 4.
Either way a huge 123 million ext. so now we know. I see know way Bengals pay him that much, but we will see.

Watt got like $41 million a year. The Bengals likely thought $30 million was too much for Trey.,
Just a reminder that last offseason the Bengals could have probably signed Chase, Trey, and Tee for somewhere around $35.5m/yr, $28m/yr, and $23m/yr.
They waited and ended up having to pay $40.25m/yr and $28.75m/yr for Chase and Tee and if they want Trey to play for them it'll be $38m/yr now.
Coulda been $86.5m/yr.
Now it's $107m/yr.
The difference is the amount the 2nd highest paid IOL in the NFL is making.
