  Backup Quarterback
Posted by: CarolinaBengalFanGuy - 08-30-2015, 09:16 PM - Forum: JUNGLE NOISE - Replies (43)

It feels like Robert Griffin III is well on his way out of Washington. They've been trying to find a trade partner but no one was biting much. Would you take RG3 as a backup Quarterback if he were to actually get released?

I always liked his potential and the fact that he's a smart guy, but for whatever reason he's been such a head case since he had his first injury :S

What do ya'll think of the possibilities?

  our weakest position group
Posted by: bengal kitten uk - 08-30-2015, 07:39 PM - Forum: JUNGLE NOISE - Replies (40)

I can see the arguments for this being TEs or LBs but for me our weakest position group at the moment is CB.

This is a position where you need at least four good starters and strong depth down to fifth or even sixth corner.

We currently have two.

Adam Jones and Dre Kirkpatrick look to be decent starters. Leon Hall has not played well in preseason after struggling last season and tbh looks like a liability. We simply don't know what were have with the currently injured Darqueze Dennard and beyond that we have two rookies in Josh Shaw and Troy Hill - neither of whom have looked comfortable in preseason - and the ever mediocre Chris Lewis-Harris.

I'm terrified of an injury to Adam Jones right now, and you should be, too. This is the one position I could see us improving prior to week one through trade or picking up someone else's cuts.

  Which quarterback...?

...has a hotter wife?

McCarron?
[Image: th?id=JN.MYasGTz1pTDORP4xIfOcpQ&pid=15.1...=300&h=300]

Dalton?

Slight edge to McCarron, I'd think. No wonder AJ took so long to heal.

Oh, okay. I'll say something "football" to validate this post.

McCarron's pros:
Big game experience
Redshirt tutorial
Perhaps a better rifle than our Red one

Dalton's pros:
NFL experience
Superior mobility
Durability
Continuity...but on a short leash this time?

Slight edge to Dalton, I'd think.

  Chris Carter Over Margus Hunt
Posted by: Lqhybrid25 - 08-30-2015, 12:20 PM - Forum: JUNGLE NOISE - Replies (94)

I know Carter is a Tweener, but in the end of the day the kid has played better than Hunt at DE.

I think Carter gives them flexibility at SAM back as well. I think they should keep him over Hunt at DE.

Anyone else?

  Defensive Line
Posted by: bengal kitten uk - 08-30-2015, 12:11 PM - Forum: JUNGLE NOISE - Replies (47)

Everyone's talking about our Defensive Line, and how it is probably the most stacked position on the team. This despite getting rid of a starter (Geathers) from last year.

Just looking at the numbers, there are 12 players with a legitimate claim for a spot:

DE: Dunlap, Johnson, Gilberry, Clarke, Hunt,
NT: Peko, Thompson, Sims
UT: Atkins, Hardison, Still, Williams

We usually keep 9, but even if they keep 10 there's going to be at least one big name player out on the street.

We can almost certainly assume that last year's starters, plus Johnson, are safe (Dunlap, Johnson, Gilberry, Peko, Atkins). That leaves 4 or 5 spots for Thompson (3rd rounder), Still (2nd), Sims (3rd), Hardison (4th), Hunt (2nd), Clarke (3rd), Williams (UFA). So this is the year we're giving up on at least one 2nd or 3rd rounder from recent times.

Here are your options:

Brandon Thompson - has played all three seasons but struggles to make his mark in games. Has done nothing this pre-season due to injuries.
Devon Still - well known off the field, has yet to do much of anything on the field. Was cut this time last season and ended up on the practice squad until injuries opened up a spot on the 53. Has been anonymous during pre-season.
Pat Sims - he's big and can back up Peko at NT or work alongside him on rushing downs. We were better against the run when he last played for us. Has done nothing this pre-season due to injuries.
Marcus Hardison - the rookie has shown promise during pre-season. It's unlikely we cut a 4th rounder so early as he'll be picked up by somebody else.
Margus Hunt - flashed last pre-season but has yet to get it together during the regular season. Has had lots of injuries. A bit of an expert at looking like he might get to the QB, but being too late for the sack.
Will Clarke - last year's third rounder, he's looked decent. Could back up MJ at RE.
DeShawn Williams - the wildcard UFA from Clemson. He's built like Geno and has been getting a lot of praise for his pressure and work-rate both in practice and during pre-season games. One of the few DTs we have that can rush the passer.

If it was my choice, I'd go for 9 (+ Chris Carter in the LBs):

Dunlap, Peko, Atkins, Johnson
Gilberry, Hardison, Sims, Clarke,
Thompson

Still and Hunt don't make it and Williams misses out in the hope we can squeeze him to the PS.

What say you?

  700WLW/1530 RANT (Bengals Coverage Related)
Posted by: Wes Mantooth - 08-30-2015, 11:54 AM - Forum: JUNGLE NOISE - Replies (40)

Ok, I'm not sure where to start out here. I guess first let me say that if you're not local you may want to ignore this, as it probably won't interest you in the least. Let me preface this rant by also saying that I understand this thread could probably be in a number of other places, but since it will get the most talk here and it is related to the Bengals I'm putting it here.

Ok, so.... Am I the only one is absolutely amazed by the amount of coverage and time that is given to the Reds by these two stations? It's honestly unbelievable how much these stations devote to one team. Yes, I understand that they have a monetary interest. Yes, I understand that baseball season is long and that they're a lot of games. I get all that. But for anyone that flips around the AM dial I think you'll find that an obscene amount of time is spent on the Reds.

Let's start with just the length of the season and games. That's built in coverage. You've got the end of March, April, May, June, July, August, Sept, and sometimes October. Just about 8 full months of baseball games. Usually 5 or 6 times a week. Obviously 162 games. Oh, and don't forget Spring Training, they got those covered too. Just in the game coverage that is a LOT of time for baseball fans to get their fix.

Now, let's talk scheduling. You're going to get Lance McAllister from 3-6 on game days. That's going to be 90% Reds talk, no matter the time of year or the place their in. Then you're going to get the pre-game from 6-7. Then you got the game from 7-10:30-ish. Oh, and then you got Extra Innings too. So basically, as far as sports coverage on game day, which 5 or 6 days a week, you getting pretty much all Reds, from 3 to midnight.

9 hours of Reds, 5 or 6 days a week, for 8 months, for a total of 162 days. Now, I know these numbers aren't close to exact, but if you were to total that it would 1,458 hours of Reds related programming during the season. For prespective, to be considered eligible for benefits in many job you need to work 1,000 hours. To listen to all the Reds discussion it would be like a full time job.

(I hope some people are still following me here cuz I'm just rambling but I will eventually get to a larger point.)

Oh, and did I mention that Eddy and Tracy talk a decent amount about the Reds? Did I mention there's a Dat Dude BP report? Did I mention that Eddie are Marty have a regular segment? Did I mention that even Ken Broo's weekened afternoon shows are dominated by Reds talk, even though they're on later that night?

Reds, Reds, Reds, Reds, Reds. When they suck, Reds. When the games are meaningless, Reds. Aroldis Chapman starter talk for the 1,454 time? Yes, please. Pitchers and Catchers reporting? Let's talk Reds in the winter. Winter meetings? Lets talk Reds in during football.

Baseball has a LOT of downtime during the games. A shit ton. There is ample opportunity between innings, pitches, the 3rd pitching change in 2 innings for a situational, to discuss on things Reds. You got that almost everyday. You got pre-game, got Extra innings, you got this for 8 ***** months. So much Reds coverage built into the schedule. So why do the talk shows surrounding the shit sandwhich of Reds coverage we're offered up still need to be dominated by more Reds talk?

UC has a darkhorse Heisman candidate, how much time is spent on Gunner Kiel? UC has a good chance of being ranked, but little to no discussion. Stadium upgrades, conference alignment, Mick Cronin's health, UC-Xavier back on campus, O$U football, the fact that Cincinnati has some of the best high school football in the country, local athletes, UK basketball, the state of recruiting.... The list goes on and on. None of gets any significant coverage.

Now to the Bengals. The Reds suck this year. You've spent all this time on them. Now that football is here why the hell is at least a 50-50 split on talk radio? I turned on Broo yesterday, and guess what? Reds talk. I remember a few years ago I turned on Lance the Friday before opening weekend in the NFL. I figured it would be nothing but NFL talk. Nope, he talked Reds, even though they had the Wildcard locked up and they were waiting for the regular season to end.

I'm sorry, but it drives me nuts. Even huge Reds fan can't want to hear Reds talk for 3 hours at this point. Right? For the love of God, please start giving more attention to the NFL, which crushed MLB in ratings, and start devoting more time to college teams!!! PLEASE!!!!

If I hear Lance, or Mo, or Broo, or whoever, open up another show talking about the Reds I may just drive into oncoming traffic!!!! Make it stop!!!! For someone who loves sports, I immediately turn off your programming because it sucks!!!

Rant over.... Whew, I feel better. Sorry, about the wall of words.

  Overreaction Day
Posted by: SHRacerX - 08-30-2015, 11:23 AM - Forum: JUNGLE NOISE - Replies (37)

Andy Dalton might not throw another incomplete pass...ever.

Seriously, though, I heard the postgame show discussing Jake Fisher and his versatility.  They were describing him as "the first lineman off the bench" and how his athleticism would allow him to line up as the extra OT, etc.

My overreaction (it was his first game action) is that I thought he looked awful.  Flopping on the ground.  Whiffing blocks.  Poor balance, etc.  I even watched some of the replay when I got home, isolated on him, and it only confirmed the bad showing.  I didn't get to the blocked punt at the end of the game, but I think he was the one that missed that block, too.

I remember way back when watching a very young Andrew Whitworth get destroyed at Indianapolis by their DEs and thinking "this guy is never going to make it", only to have him develop in to one of the best LTs in the league.  Fisher is going to have a long way to go to try and replace Andre Smith next year, if that is the plan.

Fans Won't Like The Player Cuts
Posted by: kevin - 08-30-2015, 11:12 AM - Forum: JUNGLE NOISE - Replies (24)

Some Fan Favorites will be cut, you can see it coming. It's a numbers game now. I would like to keep all the defensive line players, we are that deep at D Line, but it just can't be done. ....The question is : Who will get us to Play-Off Wins and Super Bowl...Burkhead for example is on the team because he was good on special teams and has now shown he can do many things on offense. The more a player can do, the more he makes the team. Some Fans are going to be upset that some players they love and may even have a jersey of are gone by the Oakland game. I wish we could keep all the D Linemen, but we can't. ....I do look for Zimmer and other coaches to grab up D Linemen we cut, because they all have game, we just can't keep them all.

I did see some players step up with linebacker number uniforms. We needed that. We were in dire need of players stepping up with linebacker uniform numbers this summer. There is more depth than last summer at LB and WR. I think they are planning on a return by Burfict at some point also. ...We may not have to keep a small slot receiver if Burkhead fills the bill. ....These will not be easy cuts, but cuts must be made.

  Thoughts from the Bears game.
Posted by: BritishBengal - 08-30-2015, 09:09 AM - Forum: JUNGLE NOISE - Replies (76)

Just wanted to see what people thought of the game.

It was of course a much better performance than against the Buccs. Liked what I saw from Marvin Jones, Burkhead and McCarron on offense. On D I thought Atkins and Dunlap were as advertised, Chris Carter shone once again and Illoka did a good job in coverage.
