Lucas Patrick
#21
It would be a slight improvement at LG. We still need to address RG if he is signed.

Was he injured in 2024? Or did he lose his starting job as only over 500 snaps in 2024 after over 1000 in 2023?

Yeah, Patrick is better than Cappa. Nothing wrong with signing this guy.

Still would like a better pass blocker for Burrow as well though.

Quote:CINCINNATI — The Bengals are brining in veteran guard Lucas Patrick for a visit, league sources have confirmed.

Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports was the first one to report the news.

Patrick, 31, started 10 games for the Saints last season and has experience at both guard and center.

He spent the first five years of his career in Green Bay, before playing for the Bears for two years and the Saints last year.

Patrick could be a solid depth piece, but signing him to be a starter would be underwhelming—especially with the other guard talent available in free agency. He has plenty of experience and if he's coming off of the bench, it would be great for depth. Would they sign him to be a day one starter? That would be a questionable move at best.

It's worth noting that Patrick was in Green Bay with current Bengals defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery.

Cincinnati already signed two former Packers in free agency: T.J. Slaton and Oren Burks. Will Patrick be next?

He posted a 64.6 overall grade according to Pro Football Focus last season—the second mark of his career. He didn't allow a sack over the last two seasons in 893 pass blockin snaps and gave up three quarterback hits over that span according to PFF.

If the Bengals sign Patrick, he'll join an offensive line room that includes Ted Karras, Orlando Brown Jr., Amarius Mims, Cody Ford and Cordell Volson.

Not the best numbers, but the bolded tells me why they are looking at him

Ugh...really? Why are they always 1-2 moves behind where they need to be? Risner, Scherff, Jenkins and Hernandez are all big upgrades at the position we need the most and we are looking at a glorified backup? Protecting Joe Burrow needs to stop being a luxury. I don't know how it isn't obvious to them at this point. One more serious injury and he becomes Andrew Luck.

We all agree they need to upgrade the guard situation. The difference is the FO has limited money and our defense is the side of the ball in major need of a talent infusion. Bengals obviously favor pass blockers over run blockers to protect Burrow. Cappa was horrid and Volson (LG) was not much better. This guy seems to be an add for LG, maybe we still are looking at the RG upgrade as well as the guys you mention are all right guards. One of them Hernandez tore his ACL so likely is not ready to work out for a team yet.

That makes him look even better for sure. In the end QB sacks and QB hits are what you are judged for as an OL, not your PFF ratings.

Fixed it for you.

Patrick isn't a glorified backup and he may be more suited to our team.

All the other guys are just names and it doesn't mean anyone is better or worse. Riley Reiff wasn't the best fit for us, Collins as well since he couldn't pass block well anymore (liked both guys, FTR) and on top of ALL of that, the other guys are still unsigned and available.

Resigning Ford and adding Patrick are steps towards retooling the Guard room. Expect at least one OG pick fairly early in the draft also and don't be surprised if they also sign another OG.

Impressive 2024 and 2023, zero sacks allowed in over 1,500 snaps , and 2024 was his best season, this would be a great pickup for the $$ and has played three positions i believe...

Yep, plus some of those names are coming off of injury. Hernandez tore his ACL last year, Teven Jenkins always has trouble staying healthy.

Risner or Scherff would be great to add after Patrick though to really free up the Draft so we don't HAVE to draft a Guard early.

Of the names, I absolutely do think Risner would be the best fit for us. The other guys, meh: I've seen enough tape to know that the PFF grades are inaccurate.

So Patrick was ranked 79th overall in pass protection. 64 starting guards in the league, that means that he was not starting caliber in the most important metric. Why are they sniffing around for a backup when Scherff and Risner are still out there? They should've kept Cappa at this rate. They could've bet on a potential rebound.

Trying to sign Trey. There’s not a ton of salary cap room.
Romo “ so impressed with Zac ...1 of the best in the NFL… they are just fundamentally sound. Taylor the best winning % in the Playoffs of current coaches. Joe Burrow” Zac is the best head coach in the NFL & that gives me a lot of confidence." Taylor led the Bengals to their first playoff win since 1990, ending the longest active drought in the four major North American sports, en and appeared in Super Bowl LVI, the first since 1988.

Maybe the Bengals have a vision for this guy. Maybe they see something that no other team in the league does. Maybe he goes on to be a steady presence on the line for much of the Burrow era.

I find it much more likely they this is another example of them caring little about the position and finding a cheap body to throw at it.

If Joe Burrow ever benefits from good guard play in his career it will likely be by complete accident. The team has made strides in how it operates, but this particular viewpoint is annoying as shit. Don't pay guards, don't pay safeties. It never changes.

The bad part is, they are shaving years off of the career of the best player in franchise history by trotting these scrubs out there. Defenses knew Volson and Cappa were exposed last year and they were targeted heavily. If Joe wasn't Houdini, things could have been even uglier. One day Father Time is going to limit his escapability and these scrub guards are going to cost him more than just a few ugly hits.

28 before the extensions.  Probably an additional 12 after.  Another 5 or 6 with the eventual Pratt release.  The market isn't overflowing with 15 million dollar multi-year free agents.  There isn't a player still available that they couldn't afford.  They could afford multiple.
