Reds July Game Thread 2024

But I'd guess we're at or very near the top of the league in dumbass base running mistakes. And a lot of that is coaching. Bench a player's butt for a couple games every time he screws up running bases and it will slow way down.

I get and believe in the aggressive baseball approach. But there's a line somewhere there between aggressive and stupid. And we get into the stupid end way to much!!

I saw a caught in run down highlight somewhere? To be honest I'm not even sure now that I think about it what game it even was? But still, waayyyy to many screw ups on base paths by this team. We could literally probably add 3 or 4 wins if we didn't run ourselves out of the game. Maybe more??

It was the bottom of 8 in a tie game with 2 outs. No need to be stupid like that giving them possibly an extra out extending the inning because the next guy somehow would manage to get a hit and put TB in the lead.

Nice effort by Marte on that attempted steal on second, didn’t even run hard.

Add another 4 hitter or less spread out over the whole game to the list. They have the patent now on turning mediocre and below starters into Cy Young.

I doubt there's another team that would have a guy hitting .192 with 124 strike outs in 271 at bats (pushing 50%) being a regular player with the 4th most at bats on the team!!

He has a hot game, for him, hits a solo HR and a single. Then does nothing but strike out and pop up for the next dozen games. He's batting .143 vs lefties. It's way pas time to pull the plug.

K% is PA, not AB. Otherwise a guy who walks a lot like Votto in 2015 for example would go from 19.4% K to 24.8% K.

Benson is still almost at 40%, which is still absolutely absurd and he should have been sent down to AAA awhile ago. Was surprised that they optioned Hinds over optioning Benson (or just DFA'ing Slater).... but I guess the Reds FO doing shit that doesn't make sense is one of the most consistent things about them.

And the guy that was traded to the Giants for him pitched twice in their farm system, was waived and pitched a scoreless ninth inning last night for the Mets against the Braves in a loss. They already moved on from him and the Reds are still holding onto Slater. He might wind up being their deal for the trading window.

And Elly makes mistake number two on the bases. I'm almost numb to it now.

Elly running wild.

Almost impressive that the rest of the lineup turns his 3-3 and 3 SB into 0 runs.

Nothing like walking 2 batters in 8th inning of a 1 run game.

Curse of the 8th inning strikes again.

Peak David Bell management.

Cruz in the 8th. Guy has given up a run, given up a run, blew a save, pitched an inning, went .1 innings, and now gave up some runs in his last 6 appearances.

Moll isn't giving up runs often, so naturally Bell has relegated him to a .1 inning guy. Sims has been good too, but he has a walk problem, so naturally he only comes in after there's a disaster and the bases are loaded. Insanity. Gotta put Cruz in there in high leverage so he can enjoy that 4.81 ERA after having a 4.91 last year.

EDIT: LOL! And then he puts Will Benson in to PH for Slater because Bell thinks batting from the right side of the plate is more important than being a good hitter. So naturally Benson strikes out to end the game.

Same old Reds, can’t finish a game. When do we say enough is enough?

What little momentum the Reds had winning 2 in Atlanta, is now a distant memory.

3-5 to start the 2nd half, yea that’s gettin things done

Bats were mostly silent, two or three base running gaffes, and a manager who still doesn't understand situational late-inning baseball.
