Paul Dehner on X:

“Potential help in answering the guard problem. Would add to the competition at both spots. FWIW, has allowed 0 sacks and 3 QB hits over the last two seasons (893 pass block snaps) according to PFF. Played all 3 IOL spots.“

Was never drafted.  An undrafted FA in 2016.

Won't cost a ton too...which is likely what they're looking for.

If signed I can’t imagine it would be for big money. We could easily add another one

One commenter on X said he had a lot of penalties. Not sure the numbers

That is a cheap Volson upgrade. But still a big step down from (a healthy) Jenkins or Hernandez.

Scherff & Risner are better in pass pro, Pateick a better run blocker than either.

Scherff has always been a RG. Risner & Hernandez played all their snaps at RG last year.

Jenkins was a LG last year, but has played both sides and some tackle. Patrick played LG and C last year and has some history at all 3 spots. He is 31.

To me, this is a short term Volson upgrade with more versatility. More LG/C3.

Remember, we van save $3+ mil by waiving Volson. Another $3+ mil by waiving Moss. $7 mil between them.

Bringing him in seems to be trolling those who wanted to pay big money to Teven Jenkins

From wiki “After alternating with Teven Jenkins at right guard the first two games, he was named the starter in Week 3”

I love UDFAs that have success in the NFL. Nothing is handed to them. They earn everything they receive. Plus we've had some good luck when poaching Saints players in the past, aka Trey.

I brought him up in another thread as the minimum of acceptable guard improvement that I'd be happy with.  He's a bridge guard for probably a 2 year deal with a partial guarantee for next year, but his PFF numbers are solid for what they'd probably be paying him.  Hope thus gets wrapped up for closure.  Then, if another vet like Risner caves because of less interest after the draft maybe we get a bargain.

Sounds like he would be an upgrade from Cappa. Patrick seems to be versatile and can play LG, RG and Center. He's been around a while, does anybody know his injury history? He may be what the Bengals have been looking for, a small upgrade and value FA. Let's see how his visit goes.

Dehner just recently tweeted Jenkins is not happening. I’d embed it if I could

For me, Cody Ford is a secondary backup. OL9 type. He is versatile and has a good attitude. Can play anywhere but C. Gives good effort. But is mediocre or worse everywhere. OT4/G4 for me. But a nice option on gameday because he can cover 4 spots.

Volson is LG only who is a pretty good/decent run blocker but very poor in pass pro.

Patrick is more versatile than Volson, a better pass blocker, and just as good a run blocker. In an ideal world, he'd be our primary G (and maybe C) backup. In the top 8 for sure. Ahead of Volson AND Ford.

But he is a low end starter. Which is better than what we have now, for sure. ATM, he starts at LG.

The thing about Jenkins - the Bears had one of the WORST offensive lines in football last year. So bad they have thrown BIG resources in the offseason to bring in 3 new interior starters already. They saw Jenkins as part of the problem, not the solution.

Plus he's always injured with back issues.

What snapshot of time are those numbers from? Volson played 985 snaps last year, Cappa 1133, Ford 689.

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations
