Trey Hendrickson Update
(06-01-2025, 07:48 PM)rfaulk34 Wrote: Well hell. If we're gonna do that, why don't we just find out how all the other guys got their sacks. You know, just so we can have a fair comparison.

2 of Joe Burrow's top 3 games in both yards and pass TDs last year came against the 31st pass defense.
Both of Chase's top 2 games in yards last year came against the 31st pass defense.

Chase 2024: 100.5 yards per game
Chase 2024 minus the 31st pass defense games: 83.4 yards per game

Nobody shitting on Burrow and Chase's production last year because they had their biggest games against bad competition, and Chase still became the highest paid non-QB in the NFL because of it... but now that the NFL sack king wants paid, time to figure out how to minimize the sack total of a guy with back-to-back 17.5 sack seasons. Lol

He wants paid, but he's under contract (A contract, and pay increase, that he signed less than 2 years ago).   You dont seem to understand the basics.

The Bengals dont have to do anything, they already gave him two contracts.

It's standard NFL business to ask/sign a contract extension in the final year of contract.  In fact it makes business sense fro the Bengals to sign Trey to a contract extension this offseason rather than next offseason to save money in future years.

im not sure if it was standard procedure to ask for a new contract shortly after signing your last one.. also standard procedure is out the window after major contracts for burrow, chase and higgins, like all teams that have giant contracts with multiple players, the money pot is drying up.. but if true the bengals did offer him a new contract...

He signed a one year contract two off seasons ago; he is in the final year of his contract.  He is do for another contract extension and it benefits the Bengals  to do so.

They have plenty of cap room to sign Trey Hendrickson. Tee's, Chase, and Burrows contract have zero to do with Trey's situation.

Nope, he has been asking for 2 yrs for new one and his asking price is too high for bengals to afford to keep a defense together, he should take the 28 million offer or sit if he wants...we will spend it on others players

He is in the final year of his contract it's an irrelevant point that he asked for a contract extension last offseason.

If the asking price is 2 high then why hasn't he been traded?

Why should Trey take a below market contract?

They spent $28.75m/yr on their 0x Pro Bowl #2 WR who last had 1k yards 3 years ago.

But the 1st Team All-Pro back-to-back 17.5 sack guy should take even less than that because otherwise the Bengals can't afford to keep a defense together? Lol

You don't seem to grasp how the Hendrickson camp operates. They want a new raise every year.

Because he is under contract this year, and can get franchised next year.

The bengals own his NFL service, if they want, for the next 2 years.

For that, Trey would make around 39 million dollars over the next 2 years

Is it  Trey last year on his current deal?
Has Trey performed at a high level?
Would it benefit the Bengals to sign him to a long-term deal now instead of letting his price go up and signing him next offseason?

Last night, BengalsWire predicted that Hendrickson will lose the standoff, which, unfortunately for him, is just part of the business aspect of the NFL and unfortunate part for him.

Quote:As written here consistently, barring a shocker, it has long felt like the Cincinnati Bengals will eventually emerge the "winners" of the contract standoff with star defensive end Trey Hendrickson.

Those Bengals just happen to hold the vast majority of the leverage during this latest contract impasse with Hendrickson, despite the All-Pro's recent 20-plus minute airing of grievances at a team practice.

Despite this, Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated slots Hendrickson losing the standoff as one of his bold predictions for the season:

"The alternative is to become Haason Reddick, which, for a player entering his age-31 season, cannot be appetizing. By taking the Bengals’ reported current offer, Hendrickson can upgrade his salary by nearly $12 million and, while still being underpaid, improve upon his prospects for next offseason more by staying in Cincinnati than he could as a year-to-year mercenary for less on another roster."

I've said all along that rushers fall off after age 30, so Hendrickson is just in a bad position to try and play hardball, especially with no other teams showing much interest in him, especially not with those contract demands.

The article mentions all that:

Quote:By now, Bengals fans know that isn't all that bold, though. This is merely the latest offseason dustup with Hendrickson over a contract. Past years have featured short one-year extensions and even reported threats of retirement. This offseason featured the Bengals actually granting him permission to seek a trade that never happened due to his age, production level, contract demands and trade asking price, to name a few factors.

It's unfortunate but it's just part of the business:

Quote:Right now, Hendrickson is simply using every last bit of leverage he has left to make noise before the fines start to kick in during mandatory minicamp this month and training camp after that. He's extremely unlikely to actually miss games at his age with millions of dollars lost in fines while hurting his value with other teams.

Hendrickson will likely wind up "losing' this affair in the form of a massive pay raise over the short-term, but just not for the exact number or years he and his reps seek.

I still think they should give him an incentive laden contract, like so many sacks or pressures for so many snaps played, but I know that's not how the NFL works.

I would rather set it as the expectation now, then keep it in limbo.

I would also rather have the Option to tag him at 24M, opposed to being in a 3 year 90M deal that runs through his age 33 season.

Sometimes contracts work out better for the player, sometimes they work out better for the team.  It can not always be perfect, and yes, sometimes a player plays over their current value.

No, it wouldnt benefit the Bengals to sign him to a long term deal now.  The Bengals already signed Trey for the 2025 at a good deal before his price went up.  He doesnt like that price now and wants more money than his contract.  That's his problem.   He wants to redo his contract every year when prices go up so signing him now before prices go up next year means nothing.  He would just turn around and want to redo his contract next year or the year after.

If the Bengals gave Trey an extension at 32 million a year and Trey had a season with 22 sacks, do you not think he wouldnt come back wanting another raise?  Signing him now to a lower contract makes no difference because when prices go up Trey thinks he should be able to ignore his contract and ask for more money even if he just got a new contract the previous year.

Gotta go look at everything Rfaulk when discussing this don't we? Love Trey and his numbers are what they are, dude is a top pass rusher
and he will own some LT's and be shut down by guys we expect him to own. Just the way it is with Trey. Pay the man is all I can say but he
shouldn't be 35+ mil per year at his age and all the factors IMO.

His contract is up after the season. If he repeats his performance from this past season then his price tag will only go up on the market.

To your second point. No, I do not think Trey will ask for a new deal next season if he is given a new extension this off-season.

I don't think so either especially if he hires a new agent. Thinking Trey just wants a 3 or 4 year deal and that is what is holding things up.

Bengals just don't want to go for more than 2 and I get it.
