That was my memory. I was divided on whom the Bengals should select, but I saw so many posters saying just don't pick Stewart that I was aghast when he was the selection. 

Nate converted me to a more positive view. He was spot on about Mims, who he was pushing strongly before that draft, and so earned some trust from me when he was converted after the draft into a more positive view on Stewart. But that memory of posters saying the player they least wanted to see picked was Stewart is seared in my memory. Let's hope the Bengals didn't outsmart themselves again and actually got a winner. (Although, he needs to get signed and practicing starting this Saturday!)

A lot of these guys at DE are highly productive at 34/35.

At worst, you get 2 really highly productive years from him, the years 3 and 4 you get less sacks, but that could still be like 8-10.

Yeah. I was against the pick too. That said, he has NFL strength and top end speed and athleticism. But, the sack production is missing. So was it the scheme in college, or is it him? And can it be taught?

And, does he even want to play here?

And when he wasnt getting sacks he came within inches of the quarterback, disrupted the play and had him running for his life..and stewart did the same thing all over the field..great pick

Edit - Like I said back during the McCarton deal  non deal let's pretend Trey is a 1988 Ford pinto. I work at a car dealership. A guy comes in and says "I'll give you $35k in cash for that pinto right now" and I think "wow this guy is a moron...." but I push my luck by saying "actually it's $50k for that 1988 Pinto" and the guy says "no deal" and puts his sack with a dollar sign over his shoulder and walks off. 

My boss isn't going to congratulate me for going for broke and driving a tough deal, he's going to fire me for turning down a $35k offer for a Ford pinto. 

Now let's say I have a 1988 Ford pinto at my home that I don't want to part with because I have sentimental attachment to it because I lost my virginity in the backseat. I don't really want to sell it, but I should at least convince  myself that I'm trying to, so I put a for sale sign on it and when people come by and ask if it's for sale I turn down anything under $50k because I don't actually want to sell it. Bengals have a top ten winning oercentage in the NFL the last the four years..the have been to both the superbowl and AFC championship games in 2 of those Four years..and if not for injuries suffered by burrow and numerous other key playersxthe past two years..we would have been in the playoffs ...the organization is drafting and doing many things right

Not blasting Stewart. But I do think it's funny that Stewart with 39 pressures and a pass rush win rate that puts him in the 57th percentile his final season in college is extremely disruptive and a great pick. While Trey Hendrickson with 83 pressures and a pass rush win rate that was 2nd in the league just gets his sacks against bad teams and wrestles with the tackle he's lined up against.

You can't have it both ways, so which is he front office?

Trey is under contract this year being paid 21 million.  Why do the Bengals need to pay him more when he is already under contract?  They are paying him what he signed his contract for.  Just because Trey is under contract for 21 million doesnt mean the Bengals should take less than a 1st round draft pick to trade him.  What is Aiden Hutchinson being paid this year?  Should the Lions trade him for less than a couple of 1st round picks because he isnt being paid as much as other DE's?

Or Whitworth. But those are all outliers and not the norm. And DE is a position that once you start to falter, you go off a cliff. I remember watching Trey almost unable to walk in the KC games he was going so hard. Does anyone really think he has many more seasons like that in him at his age?

I've heard the data suggests players with his Trey age and production metrics that outside of injury they tend to gradually decline. Not sure how big of a sample size that's from or how much we want to trust historical trends. But there is data that suggests in 3 or 4 yrs he could still be a 10 sack guy.

To me the last year doesnt seem to count. Give him a 3 year extension so keeping him 4 more years. If he starts to drop off you can get out of it early.
