Drew Sample is PFF’s #1 graded pass blocking TE
Posted by: Housh - 10-03-2023, 11:05 AM - Forum: JUNGLE NOISE - Replies (46)

This is from a Twitter user named Willie Lutz. Saw the post and didn’t see one on here.

Apparently out of 110 eligible TE’s Sample is #1 in pass blocking and as a bonus he’s 33/110 in run blocking.

So he’s having a good bounceback season once you factor in he’s not here to catch passes but his only real purpose is to block.

Still not happy about getting a glorified lineman at TE in the second round but being the best pass blocking TE in the league when many of us wanted Darnell Washington is definitely a plus.

Keep chugging Drew. We rock with ya

Will We Improve The Line This Offseason?
Posted by: BFritz21 - 10-02-2023, 03:33 PM - Forum: JUNGLE NOISE - Replies (88)

I mean seriously improve, like fire Pollack, maybe draft guys in the first and second round, and bring in one or two top tier free agents?

I know we have Chase's contract to get done after this season, but I doubt it will take as long as Burrow's, so, if we do, will we focus on free agent linemen before or after we sign him?

Will we be able to fix it or at least make it decent?

Will we waste another year of Burrow and shorten his career by letting him keep taking sacks and hits?

Okay we lost bad. Let's all breathe in and breathe out. It's also possible the season is a wash - same thing - breathe in and breathe out.

As is our want we all (me included) start riding our hobby horses whenever the team struggles. And to be honest that is a mark of true fans as opposed to casuals. So we've had fire [insert name of coaches we don't like], bench [insert name of player(s) we feel is not performing] and so on. It's therapeutic but we should also note we have no authority in these matters.

The team right now is in a rut that is actually pretty strange. Defensively, a lot of us expected the inexperienced secondary to have problems settling in but few expected we would be THIS bad against the run and blowing coverages THIS often. Hopefully they get their act together soon enough to be respectable.

Offensively I am pretty sure no one expected Burrow to be THIS off, calf or no. You can see it when he throws, his mechanics are off and as a result he lacks his customary pinpoint accuracy. He also does not roll, shift, climb the pocket or do anything - he is immobile back there. This is making it much harder for the OL to get into any rhythm. Arguments can be made both for and against sitting him - my position is that sitting doesn't heal the calf BUT if he can't operate the offense he probably needs to sit a bit.

And yes the line needs to do better but in the same vein we need to be calling plays that cater to their strengths (power). One of my hobby horses is the need for us to ditch the wide zone completely, so every time I see them wheel it out it aggravates. This line is not built for it. And also yes the receivers need to be better at not dropping balls and at getting off coverage. The offensive failures are unit wide like the defensive ones.

All we can do as fans is wait and see. Which is frustrating of course. Hopefully against AZ they can get it together enough to win so that the following game they can hope to get back to .500.

It’s Monday. Anyone Get Fired Yet?

It’s almost 11:00 ET here in SW Ohio. By now Mike Brown has no doubt finished his Frisch’s Breakfast Buffet and taken his ‘91 Lumina to the gas station. He should be at his office inside Paycor Stadium knocking heads as we speak.

I can think of 275 million reasons why Mikey Boy should be absolutely furious. Joe Burrow is a generational talent whose team should NOT be 1-3 and scoring 10.5 points per game. This talented offense should be scoring ten points per QUARTER. Joe is getting physically abused in what little pocket exists and his calf injury affects his mobility, his throwing, and most of all his mind.

Frank Pollack and Brian Callahan should be on the hottest seats on the planet right now — maybe Zac Taylor too. Mike Brown cannot be happy right now. He opened his wallet wide and the team is playing at a level which can only be described as an epic failure.

Make a move, Mikey Boy. Please. WWPBD? What Would Paul Brown Do?

  Death by 1000 cuts.

I think people drastically underestimate the cumulative effect losing games, and losing teammates has on team chemistry.
For example, losing Uzomah (then Hurst), Perine, Bell, Bates, etc.  Each time it was like... eh, no big deal - next man up, right?
But, like death by 1000 cuts, every lost teammate left yet another hole to fill, both physically and mentally.

The difference between winning and losing is RAZOR-THIN, and it takes very little to fall of that edge into the abyss like we're seeing now.
The Super Bowl run was like fairy-tale magic.  The stars aligned. Everything fell in place.  No catastrophic injuries, and every bounce or penalty seemed to go mostly the Bengals' way.

But, just as importantly, that team had leadership and chemistry... a spark that now seems to be missing.

Some may say it's one thing or another... I say what we're seeing now is the result of a slowly draining lifeblood of chemistry, lost drop by drop.

  Game was so bad

That I vacated my comfy recliner and headed to the grocery store at halftime. Wasn't worth allowing my blood pressure to get elevated over watching the offense fail while attempting the same plays, over and over again. All I can point to is the coaches should have come into the week with a very different game plan, obviously the one they've been using this season isn't working.

I was excited when they re-signed both Pratt and Wilson but it looks like all of that $ is weighing them down. They did nothing today vs Henry.
Wilson whiffed on a tackle and Pratt got the Henry TD thrown right over him. The announcers knew it was coming but the Bengals players and coaches didn’t? Embarrassing

Wilson and Pratt are members of a long list of disappointing players on this years team. Wilson got a couple of picks vs Rams but other than that they look like garbage on most of plays I see.

They paid Pratt, Wilson and Burrow this off season and all 3 of them suck now?

“We will be perfect in every aspect. You drop a pass, you run a mile. You miss a blocking assignment, you run a mile. You make a fumble, i will break my foot off in you John Brown hind parts and then you will run a mile. Perfection. - Coach Boone”

I couldn’t stomach to watch 4:00 football after this game. I decided best to run a 1/4 mile for every player on the 53 - 13.25. Not a full mile like the players should be running after that performance, but that was due mostly to time (and body/age).

Hopefully Coach Boone is happy and the bengals come out perfect next week, because I’m not gonna do it again.

That was a mess of a game from last weeks preparation until end of the 4th.

Oof I just realized, seriously, I was quoting remember the titans. Lol… oof.
